Metallus Reports Strong Financial Growth in Third Quarter of 2026

Metallus Reports Strong Financial Performance in Q3 2026

On November 2, 2026, Metallus Inc. (NYSE MTUS) released its third-quarter financial results, highlighting a notable increase in net sales and income. The company generated net sales of $337.2 million, which reflects a 10% increase compared to the same quarter last year. This growth is particularly significant given that the company had net sales of $305.9 million in Q3 2025.

The net income for the quarter soared to $23.8 million, or $0.55 per diluted share, a drastic improvement from $8.1 million in Q3 2025 and $8.9 million in Q2 2026. When adjusted, the net income stands at $14.9 million when excluding one-time charges, equating to $0.35 per diluted share. Additionally, the company's adjusted EBITDA reached $34.5 million, marking a 19% rise both sequentially and year over year.

This impressive performance has been tied to the strong customer demand across various sectors, particularly in aerospace and defense, which has spurred substantial order book growth and provided the company with improved visibility for profitable growth into 2027. Metallus has also recently secured a contract with the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), initially valued at $125 million, with potential total contract value reaching $995 million over five years. This contract underscores the company's expanding footprint within the critical defense sector.

Furthermore, as of September 30, 2026, Metallus reported cash and cash equivalents totaling $98.6 million, with total liquidity reaching $388.7 million. This solid liquidity position provides the firm with a strong foundation for future investments and operational flexibility. In the third quarter alone, Metallus invested $13.1 million in capital expenditures and spent $3.6 million on repurchasing common shares.

Despite experiencing a slight decline in sequential sales from Q2 2026, where sales were $341.0 million, the year-over-year comparison shows a robust growth trajectory. Shipments of raw materials saw a sequential decrease attributed to fluctuations in automotive and energy markets, but overall shipments rose by 2% compared to the previous year facilitated largely by the aerospace and defense sectors. The melt utilization rate during this quarter was measured at 76%, an improvement over the prior year's statistics.

Metallus’s President and Chief Operating Officer, Kristopher Westbrooks, is set to assume the role of CEO following the retirement of Mike Williams later this year. This leadership transition illustrates the board's commitment to ensuring continuity in executing the company's long-term strategic direction.

Reflecting on the quarterly performance, Williams noted, “Our third-quarter achievements are testament to our strategic execution, marked by improved profitability and order book growth.” He emphasized the success Metallus has seen in achieving its target for a $250 million annualized sales run-rate in aerospace and defense, alongside maintaining a favorable mix of products and stable pricing strategies.

As the company looks ahead, it projects that its Q4 2026 adjusted EBITDA may see a dip below Q3 results due to seasonal variations and planned maintenance shutdowns, which are expected to affect profitability. Nevertheless, there is an optimistic outlook for growth stemming from demand increases and operational advancements forged in 2026.

With targeted investments and strategic maneuvers to bolster operational execution for the upcoming year, Metallus is positioning itself favorably to serve diverse markets and deliver sustained shareholder value. This combination of strong financial performance, operational effectiveness, and strategic positioning cements Metallus’s role as a leading manufacturer in the specialty metals industry.
