HYTEK Inc., headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, has made headlines by clinching the Gold award at the prestigious FRAME Awards 2025 for its innovative installation, Kintsugi Tsugiki. This interactive tree took inspiration from Kintsugi, a traditional Japanese art form that celebrates the beauty of imperfection by repairing broken pottery with gold lacquer, turning flaws into elegant features.

The concept's journey began with HYTEK's complete direction and production, focusing on the cultural heritage of Ishikawa Prefecture, where Kintsugi is deeply rooted. Kintsugi Tsugiki was unveiled at the MIDTOWN YAESU CHRISTMAS 2024 event on November 14, 2024, at the Galleria Atrium in Tokyo Midtown Yaesu. The project not only secured accolades at the FRAME Awards but also made it to the shortlist of the 2025 Japan Space Design Award, further affirming its significance in contemporary design.

The creative team's approach was to merge traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. The tree was crafted using wood sourced from both Ishikawa and Tokyo, showcasing an artistic blend that represents the collaboration between two regions. Visitors were enchanted by the interactive element; as they approached the tree and placed their hands on its base, golden light would illuminate the connections between each piece, accompanied by a stunning soundscape. This dynamic interaction intended to mirror the Kintsugi philosophy—transforming fragmentation into harmony and splendor.

The installation brings together talent from various fields. The overall direction was spearheaded by HYTEK's creative director, Takaya Mitsunaga, with collaborative efforts from producers Doko Motomaru, planner and copywriter Izumi Shimozono, and art director Saori Nakayama. The graphic design was undertaken by Momoka Chida while assistant producers included Tadaaki Sago and Toranosuke Imai. The interactive and spatial design was orchestrated by the team at Hakuten, led by designer Mitsuhiro Nunokawa and key technical directors Chihiro Takeshima and Naomi Kuga. The enchanting sound score was composed by Kan Sano, an artist hailing from Ishikawa.

The Kintsugi Tsugiki tree exemplifies the beauty of collaboration, with material support from various local entities such as Notofukko Lab and Furutani Lumber. Each piece of wood tells a story and contributes to the larger narrative of tradition and innovation.
