The Radiance of All Things: Celebrating the Legacy of Chu Teh-Chun in Hangzhou

The Radiance of All Things: A Journey Through Chu Teh-Chun's Artistic Legacy

On October 19, 2026, the China Academy of Art inaugurated one of its most significant academic projects, "The Radiance of All Things: A Retrospective of Chu Teh-Chun." This exhibition marks an essential milestone in the lead-up to the academy's centennial celebration in 2028. Chu Teh-Chun, a prominent alumnus of this institution, is recognized for bridging Eastern and Western artistic traditions, and this retrospective serves to showcase his illustrious career.

Chu Teh-Chun, born in 1920, was not only a notable Chinese artist but also gained acclaim as a French citizen. His artistic journey began at the National Academy of Art in Hangzhou, where he was first introduced to the world of creativity against the backdrop of the picturesque West Lake. After leaving for France in 1955 to study, he immersed himself in the challenges and philosophies of Western abstract painting, greatly enriching his painting style.

This comprehensive exhibition displays approximately 260 of his most significant works and archival materials from across his life. Among these are 107 stunning oil paintings that encapsulate his artistic evolution. The exhibition is subdivided into six thematic sections: 1) Early Inspirations from West Lake and Mountains, 2) Nature in the Mist, 3) Aura of Light and Color, 4) Cosmos in Change, 5) Companions of a Century, and 6) The River of Life.

One of the core messages of the exhibition is the importance of the West Lake, which held a deep spiritual significance for Chu. The president of the China Academy of Art, Yu Xuhong, and the curator of the exhibition, emphasized that the West Lake served as an eternal reference point in Chu's life and creations. This continues to resonate in his work, as he sought to represent not just the beauty of the landscape, but also its underlying cultural heritage, conveying it through his unique artistic lexicon.

In conjunction with the opening, Chu Teh-Chun's family donated 57 significant pieces of his art to the China Academy of Art, alongside a sculpture by Albert Féraud from Chu's own collection. This generous gift not only enriches the academy's collection but also plays a significant role in the research and appreciation of Chu's contributions, marking a noteworthy moment in the academy's history as it approaches its centenary. The new collection will further the understanding and exploration of 20th-century modern Chinese art.

Chu Teh-Chun’s legacy is profound, having been elected as a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1997, making him the first Chinese member in over 200 years. His remarkable career was recognized by the French President Jacques Chirac, who appointed him with the title of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 2001.

The retrospective will remain open to the public until February 18, 2027, attracting not only art lovers and scholars but also anyone interested in understanding the vibrant dialogues between tradition and modernity, East and West, that characterize Chu’s work. This exhibition is not just a look back at an artist's life, but an invitation to experience the vibrant color and engaging narratives that his paintings offer, underlining the cultural exchanges that define our artistic landscapes today.

As visitors navigate through the exhibition, they will find themselves not only examining art but also engaging in an emotional exploration of identity, heritage, and the phenomenal capacity of art to transcend geographic boundaries and historical epochs. This makes it a must-see experience for anyone visiting Hangzhou during this historic exhibition period.

It is through exhibitions like these that the China Academy of Art not only honors its past but also paves the way for future generations to explore the rich interplay of different cultural expressions within the realm of contemporary art.
