Ettifos Advances V2X Technology in Arizona
Ettifos, a key player in the field of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, has been awarded a significant contract to assist in the rollout of a pioneering project aimed at enhancing connected vehicle systems in Maricopa County, Arizona. This initiative, labeled the Connected Vehicle Acceleration Zone (CVAZ), is a substantial undertaking aimed at increasing the deployment of interoperable V2X technology across crucial routes in the area.
Supported by a cooperative agreement valued at $20 million with the U.S. Department of Transportation, CVAZ is part of a national strategy devised by the Federal Highway Administration to expedite real-world V2X implementations and nurture scalable models for connected transport infrastructures. The deployment phase is projected to span from 2024 to 2028, primarily utilizing 5.9 GHz communications to establish connectivity among a network of up to 650 roadside units and about 400 on-board units.
Ettifos will contribute its aftermarket V2X-AIR on-board unit (OBU) specifically designed for this purpose. The V2X-AIR model stands out as a compact and compliant option that enables existing vehicles to seamlessly integrate into the connected transportation network without the necessity of any factory-installed V2X hardware. This unit facilitates direct communications that enable vehicles to exchange safety and mobility data with connected roadside infrastructures and other road users.
The multi-vendor nature of CVAZ aims to amalgamate various V2X solutions, ensuring an interoperable framework that fosters scalability and sustainability in deployment. The planned V2X applications within CVAZ include essential functions such as Emergency Vehicle Preemption, Vulnerable Road User safety enhancements, Transit Signal Priority, and Freight Signal Priority, all geared toward boosting situational awareness and ensuring the safe, efficient movement of emergency responders, commuters, and freight vehicles alike.
CVAZ will encompass critical corridors and communities throughout Maricopa County, prominently featuring cities like Phoenix, Tolleson, Avondale, as well as unincorporated regions, in addition to key routes managed by the Arizona Department of Transportation, such as the US 60.
The involvement of Ettifos in CVAZ underscores its commitment to transitioning V2X technology from theoretical development to impactful real-world applications. According to Hojun Kim, the CEO of Ettifos, the CVAZ project signifies a vital leap towards scalable V2X solutions in the United States. Kim expressed pride in supporting this initiative with the V2X-AIR solution, emphasizing its potential to knit together existing vehicles into safer, smarter transportation networks across Maricopa County.
