Montefiore Einstein Unveils Enhanced Labor & Delivery Suite at Jack D. Weiler Hospital

Background

Montefiore Health System has taken a significant step towards improving maternal care in the Bronx by unveiling a newly renovated labor and delivery (L&D) suite at Jack D. Weiler Hospital. This renovation was made possible through a generous grant of $9.68 million from the New York Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program.

Enhanced Facilities

Located on the sixth floor at 1825 Eastchester Road, the upgraded Weiler Mother Baby Unit showcases a redesigned workflow that includes significant capital improvements to L&D rooms, a maternal surgical suite, and triage and waiting areas. According to Angela Gonzalez-Perez, Vice President of Operations and Executive Director at Jack D. Weiler Hospital, this renovation is crucial for enhancing patient experiences in a facility that specializes in managing high-risk pregnancies for residents of the Bronx and parts of Queens.

Features of the Renovated Unit

The modernized L&D suite includes state-of-the-art improvements:
  • - Upgraded L&D Rooms: Equipped with ensuite bathrooms to ensure privacy and comfort for patients.
  • - Reconfigured Clinician Team Station: Streamlined workflows aim to enhance care delivery efficiency.
  • - Advanced Triage Area: Six triage bays alongside a dedicated evaluation bay for better patient assessment.
  • - Maternal Surgical Suite: This facility includes a specially designated Post-Anesthesia Care Unit for C-Section patients, which features four bays for recovery.
  • - Renovated Delivery Rooms: The three operating rooms within the unit have all been upgraded, ensuring that all procedures are enabled in optimal environments.
  • - Enhanced Lighting: The suite has been designed with improved lighting options, contributing to a soothing atmosphere for both patients and their family members.

Additionally, Montefiore Einstein Health System has integrated remote monitoring technologies to support patients and clinical staff alike, further improving care quality. New food options have also been introduced to heighten the patient experience during their stay.

Leadership and Expertise

Mark H. Einstein, M.D., M.S., serves as the Chella and Moise Safra Endowed Chair and leads the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women's Health. Under his guidance, the hospital has onboarded 26 specialized physicians and healthcare providers, focusing on critical care obstetrics, adolescent medicine, and onco-fertility services. These additions are pivotal in ensuring comprehensive healthcare for women.

Montefiore has also expanded services, which now include universal depression screening in the hospital, collaborative care alongside reproductive psychiatry, a specialized outpatient clinic for complex pregnancies, and a dedicated cardiac maternal medicine program.

“The new unit not only reflects our commitment to supporting complex cases, but it also delivers care in a beautifully designed, family-friendly environment,” said Dr. Rodney Wright, Vice Chair of Obstetrics. Dr. Einstein echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the hospital's continuous progress and dedication to patient care.

Ongoing Renovations

The remodeling process has been executed in phases, ensuring that patient care was not disrupted during the renovations. Currently, five out of the six phases are complete, with the final renovations slated for early 2027. This will include upgrades to the last two L&D rooms and a back service elevator, marking a new era of facility enhancements at the hospital.

In conclusion, the revamped labor and delivery suite at Jack D. Weiler Hospital signifies a substantial commitment to advancing maternal healthcare and improving patient experiences in the Bronx. This initiative serves as a model for other healthcare institutions seeking to enhance their operational facilities and patient care pathways.
