Diego Mesa Puyo Takes Helm of Global Environment Facility to Drive Sustainable Development

Diego Mesa Puyo, a Colombian and Canadian economist known for his extensive work in sustainable development, has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairperson of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This pivotal role marks the beginning of a four-year term at the helm of the principal public funding agency dedicated to environmental initiatives. Under his leadership, the GEF aims to mobilize significant resources to address pressing global environmental challenges.

In his first commitment to the GEF, Puyo highlighted an ambitious goal: to secure more than USD 4 billion from donor countries during the ninth replenishment phase (GEF-9) from 2026 to 2030. This amount includes a recent commitment of GBP 330 million from the United Kingdom government, emphasizing the international community's dedication to ensuring sustainable environmental practices.

During a press conference, Puyo stated, "We share a global responsibility to protect nature and the environment while fostering sustainable economic growth. To achieve the 2030 objectives, it’s crucial that we link environmental action with economic development." This statement encapsulates his vision of a synergy between financial investment and ecological preservation.

Puyo's appointment aligns perfectly with the GEF's commitment to enhancing global environmental health as he aims to foster integrated solutions, increase blended finance, and boost participation from indigenous peoples and local communities. By focusing attention on the most vulnerable nations and small island developing states, he aims to create inclusive environmental policies that are beneficial for all stakeholders.

With a rich background that includes serving as the Deputy Head of the Climate Policy Division at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and being the Minister of Mines and Energy for Colombia from 2018 to 2022, Puyo has experience in leading progressive energy policies that drove over USD 3 billion in private investment for clean energy initiatives. His leadership during his ministerial period positioned Colombia at the forefront of Latin America's energy transition.

Puyo's extensive educational background includes a Master's in Economics from McGill University and a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Concordia University. Also, he has been a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) since 2012. He takes over the CEO position from Claude Gascon, who will return to his former role as Director of Strategy and Operations after his interim chairmanship at the GEF.

As Puyo embarks on this significant responsibility, he aims to transform environmental challenges into innovative opportunities for governments, investors, and communities worldwide. His appointment signals optimism as nations rally towards the 2030 sustainable development goals. The GEF is poised to enhance its role in global environmental governance under his expert guidance and unwavering commitment to sustainability, setting a precedent for future initiatives in the realm of environmental finance and policy.

In concluding remarks, Puyo asserted, "Investing in nature is an investment in resilience and sustainable development for people and the planet." His perspective is crucial as the GEF navigates through complex environmental issues while fostering economic opportunities that benefit both nature and humanity. This foundational mindset will be vital as the GEF moves forward, solidifying its place as an essential entity in the global effort to combat environmental degradation and promote sustainable solutions.

The journey ahead is filled with challenges, but with Diego Mesa Puyo at the helm, the Global Environment Facility is well-positioned to make impactful strides towards its objectives and in shaping a sustainable future for generations to come.
