Combined Arms CEO Mike Hutchings Takes Charge of ALEC's Veterans and Military Affairs Task Force
In a significant move towards enhancing support for veterans, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has formed the Veterans and Military Affairs Task Force. This initiative is primarily designed to equip state legislators with essential tools and resources aimed at shaping effective policy solutions for veterans and the military community. Taking the lead in this newly established task force are influential figures including Iowa Speaker Pro Tempore John Wills, serving as the Public Sector Chair, and Mike Hutchings, CEO of Combined Arms, who assumes the role of Private Sector Chair. They will be joined by Task Force Manager Zach Federico from ALEC.
The objective of the Veterans and Military Affairs Task Force is to tackle the intricate challenges facing service members, veterans, and their families. As noted by ALEC CEO Lisa B. Nelson, the initiative underscores the organization’s firm commitment to those who have dedicated their lives to serving the nation. Nelson emphasized that through this task force, ALEC aims to develop practical, actionable model policies that yield meaningful results—an objective vital to the veterans' community that has sacrificed so much for the country.
Mike Hutchings, who brings personal insight as a veteran himself, expressed his conviction regarding the importance of the task force. "Transitioning from military to civilian life is no small feat—it presents distinct challenges that demand practical, effective solutions," he explained. Hutchings highlighted that this task force is poised to make a significant impact by collaborating directly with legislators to craft policies that will lead to lasting changes for veterans and their families. "I am proud to be part of this initiative, which aims to bridge the gap between the struggles our veterans face and the opportunities they deserve," he added.
ALEC boasts a diverse membership that positions it favorably to support veterans and military families, with over 10% of its members being veterans themselves. Additionally, approximately 9% have military connections or are involved in veterans’ affairs committees within their states. This robust representation illuminates ALEC's dedication to addressing the needs and concerns of the military community systematically.
The Veterans and Military Affairs Task Force will hold its inaugural meetings during the 52nd ALEC Annual Meeting located in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is at this gathering that members are expected to begin formulating policies designed to bolster support for service members, veterans, and their families.
