Nordic Semiconductor, a leader in ultra-low-power wireless connectivity solutions, has made a significant move by acquiring the intellectual property and core technologies of Neuton.AI, a pioneer in fully automated TinyML solutions for edge devices. This acquisition marks a new era for machine learning at the network edge, combining Nordic’s industry-leading ultra-low-power Wireless System on Chips (SoCs) from the nRF54 series with Neuton's revolutionary neural network framework. This partnership aims to empower resource-constrained devices with scalable and powerful AI capabilities.
Vegard Wollan, CEO and Chairman of Nordic Semiconductor, commented on this momentous event saying, "This represents a generational leap in processing power and efficiency for embedded systems. By fusing Nordic’s prowess in energy-efficient wireless technologies with Neuton.AI’s state-of-the-art TinyML platform, we enable developers to bring a new genre of continuous, AI-powered devices to market—faster, smaller, and more energy-efficient than ever before."
The technological advancement brought by Neuton.AI is credited to its fully automated platform that generates ML models typically under 5 KB in size, which is up to ten times smaller and faster compared to traditional methods. Their models are designed for exceptional usability, requiring no manual tuning or data science expertise, thus allowing for rapid deployment on 8-, 16-, and 32-bit microcontrollers. With its innovative neural network framework that generates ultra-small models without predefined architectures, Neuton.AI offers precise, energy-efficient, and swift AI for edge applications across consumer goods, healthcare, and industrial sectors while conserving valuable resource assets like power and code storage.
Oyvind Strom, Executive Vice President of Short-Range Division at Nordic Semiconductor, elaborated, "We are proud to enable the powerful synergy between Neuton’s advanced ML technology and the performance of Nordic’s ultra-low-power nRF54 series. Together, we make it possible for developers to launch smarter devices with extremely low power consumption that deliver true machine learning capabilities at the edge—not just for the nRF54 series, but across the entire portfolio of Nordic's wireless connectivity SoCs. Embedded AI has now become more accessible and scalable than ever before, allowing effortless integration and reliable intelligence for the next generation of edge-AI devices."
This acquisition comes at a time when there is a growing demand for intelligence at the edge nodes. As shipments of TinyML chipsets are expected to reach $5.9 billion by 2030, Nordic is well-positioned to seize this opportunity, offering developers a robust and scalable AI/ML toolkit for applications such as predictive maintenance, smart health monitoring, process automation, gesture recognition, next-gen wearables, and IoT devices.
The acquisition includes all intellectual property and selected assets of Neuton.AI, along with a performance-oriented team of 13 skilled engineers and data scientists. The Neuton.AI brand and platform will continue to operate during the initial integration phase to ensure uninterrupted service for existing users and partners. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed and the transaction's completion is subject to the usual regulatory approvals.
