European Cities Shine in Global Tourism Rankings



European cities have consistently proven their significance in the Global Tourism City Attractiveness Index, with Paris proudly holding the second position overall. Recently, Yanolja Research, a leading global institution focused on travel and tourism, unveiled their new "Yanolja Attractiveness Index" during the "2025 Global Tourism City Attractiveness Evaluation" seminar. This influential index evaluates the allure of major tourist cities around the world from the perspective of international travelers.

A Collaborative Effort


Developed in partnership with Purdue University's CHRIBA and the HT Analytics Center at Kyung Hee University in Seoul, South Korea, this index assessed the appeal of 191 cities. With Osaka, Japan, taking the top spot in the rankings, the results highlight Europe's powerful influence in the world of tourism. Paris, standing tall as the leader on the continent, reflects the city's vibrant heritage and urban energy that continues to attract millions of visitors every year.

Europe's Strong Representation


The Yanolja index emphasizes the strong presence of several European destinations within the top echelons of global tourism. Following Paris, London claimed the sixth position, with Rome at eighth and Berlin securing the twenty-second spot. These cities not only boast rich historical backgrounds but also dynamic urban life that appeals to a wide array of tourists.

In addition to these leading cities, Barcelona, Madrid, Venice, Florence, Milan, Brussels, and Nice are all well-represented in the rankings. The results spotlight the tourism appeal of key European countries including the UK, Italy, Germany, Spain, and Belgium, underlining the continent's enduring charm and relevance within the global tourism sector.

A New Perspective on Attractiveness


Differentiating itself from traditional measures of tourism competitiveness, the "Yanolja Attractiveness Index" focuses on consumer perspectives. It examines the "attractiveness" of each city through two core pillars: "tourist appeal" and "tourist reputation." This comprehensive assessment spans four key dimensions – natural beauty and landscapes, cultural and historical offerings, experiential content, and hospitality.

Dr. SooCheong Jang, a professor at Purdue University and director of Yanolja Research, remarked on the significance of this index, stating: "The Yanolja Attractiveness Index represents the first effort to analyze the factors of 'attractiveness' in a tourism city based on actual tourist feedback, moving beyond infrastructure-centered evaluations. The strong performances of cities across diverse regions, particularly in Europe, illustrate the evolving preferences of travelers. Looking forward, cities aspiring to lead in the global tourism market must discover and communicate their unique charms effectively."

Yanolja Research plans to release the "Yanolja Attractiveness Index" on an annual basis. Detailed results, along with analyses, will be readily accessible on the official Yanolja Research website, providing valuable insights into the dynamics of the tourism industry.
