Beko Achieves Science Based Targets Initiative Validation for Net-Zero Commitment

Beko's Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Beko has reached a significant milestone in its sustainability journey by receiving validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its ambitious 1.5°C climate goals. This accomplishment highlights Beko’s commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2050. The validation of these scientifically-backed targets marks an essential step not only for Beko but for the home appliance industry as a whole.

Acquired on November 27, 2024, this validation comes at a critical time, as industries worldwide seek ways to combat climate change. Beko aims to reduce its emissions from all scopes, especially Scope 3 emissions, which account for a staggering 99% of the company’s total greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve its net-zero target, Beko is dedicating its focus to producing resource-efficient, intelligent, and connected products that contribute to a sustainable ecosystem.

The SBTi, established in 2015, works to encourage companies to set science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets aligned with the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Companies that receive SBTi validation have shown their dedication to sustainable practices and have contributed to collective emissions reduction. A report by the SBTi indicated that companies with validated targets reduced their overall emissions by 29% between 2015 and 2020.

Hakan Bulgurlu, CEO of Beko, stated, “Every industry has a crucial role in meeting global emission targets and ensuring the sustainable future of our planet. We are proud to have received validation from the SBTi for the steps we've taken over the past fifteen years to incorporate emissions reduction into our business model, but we recognize that there is still much work ahead.” He emphasized the importance of addressing Scope 1, 2, and especially 3 emissions, as the latter represents a majority share of Beko’s emissions.

Beko’s short-term targets involve cutting its absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 42% from the baseline year of 2022 by 2030, alongside a similar reduction of 42% in Scope 3 emissions that arise from the use of sold products. For its long-term strategy, the company plans to eliminate 90% of its absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2050, and also aims to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 90% within the same timeline.

Given that 82% of total Scope 3 emissions stem from product usage, Beko recognizes the need for prioritizing energy-efficient products that support a sustainable future throughout every tier of its value chain.

Sustainability is at the core of Beko’s business model, spurring innovations and initiatives aimed at enhancing not only manufacturing processes but also product design, packaging, material sourcing, and end-of-life management. The company is determined to make significant advancements toward its net-zero goals, highlighting the necessity of collaboration with industry partners, government agencies, academic institutions, and the wider supply chain.
