O'Shaughnessy Ventures Supports Roboticist Victor Nikhil Antony's Vision to Enhance Robots' Social Skills

O'Shaughnessy Ventures Invests in Ethical Robotics

O'Shaughnessy Ventures LLC (OSV), known for empowering creators, has awarded the 2026 O'Shaughnessy Fellowship to Victor Nikhil Antony, a passionate roboticist from Baltimore, Maryland. With a keen focus on improving robots' ability to understand social cues, Antony aims to bridge the gap between laboratory performance and real-world functionality for robots in educational and eldercare settings.

Antony's innovative approach involves deploying robots in environments where they can interact naturally with humans, rather than just in controlled lab scenarios. This fellowship will enable him to develop the social intelligence layer necessary for robots to contribute meaningfully in diverse settings. His first initiative includes deploying a tabletop robot designed to assist children in learning to read at charter schools in Baltimore. This project aims not just to augment educational support but also to gather valuable data on behavior interaction, crucial for fine-tuning robotic capabilities.

Additionally, he is also integrating robots into eldercare facilities to promote cognitive health among seniors. By tracking performance and reactions in these environments, Antony intends to compile over 500 hours of interaction data, which will be instrumental in enhancing how robots interpret and respond to social dynamics. The anticipated outcome of these endeavors includes measurable improvements in reading skills during the semester-long pilot programs, alongside successful deployment in eldercare.

Currently, Antony is pursuing a Ph.D. in computer science at Johns Hopkins University and has already made significant contributions to the field of socially assistive robotics. He has designed and open-sourced a suite of robots used in practical studies addressing issues in education and healthcare. His leadership role as the program chair for the 2026 HRI Pioneers workshop exemplifies his commitment to fostering new talent in human-robot interaction.

OSV's founder, Jim O'Shaughnessy, expressed great enthusiasm for supporting Antony’s innovative projects. He remarked, “Robotics is poised for immense growth over the next two decades, and Victor stands at the forefront of this evolution. We are thrilled to invest in his vision.” Antony himself shared, “Receiving the O'Shaughnessy Fellowship represents a crucial opportunity for me. This funding will allow me to enhance the social intelligence of robots, which is essential for their practical applications.”

Since its inception in 2023, the O'Shaughnessy Fellowships program has sought to identify and support the visionary efforts of creators and researchers across various fields. Each fellow can receive grants up to $100,000, in addition to access to a robust network of industry professionals and investors. In 2026, OSV plans to award up to 20 fellowships, and Antony stands as the fifteenth recipient for this year.

As applications for the fellowship are currently closed, they are set to reopen on January 1, 2027, for those interested in emerging avenues in technology and creativity.

The innovative work being done by Antony and his companions highlights the crucial intersection between robotics and social dynamics, ensuring that the future of technology remains not only groundbreaking but also socially aware. O'Shaughnessy Ventures continues to champion these groundbreaking projects that aspire to enhance the human experience through technology.
