Celebrating the Best in Vertical Filmmaking at the Nikon Vertical Movie Awards 2026

The Nikon Vertical Movie Award 2026, co-hosted by Nikon Imaging Japan and Vook, has officially announced its winners. This prestigious award ceremony focuses on vertical video content, which has become a cultural staple in the age of social media. The theme for this year's competition was "PULSE—Moments that Move the Heart." Participants submitted their works, which were carefully evaluated through a rigorous judging process, leading to the selection of 25 nominated entries, including the grand prize and other category winners.

New One Scene Category

A significant addition to this year's awards was the introduction of the "One Scene" category, aimed at filmmakers looking to experiment with vertical videos. Entries in this category were required to be 30 seconds or shorter, allowing emerging creators to easily showcase their narrative ideas without the pressure of longer formats. This innovation reflects an encouraging trend towards inclusivity in filmmaking.

Grand Prize Winner

The grand prize was awarded to flare created by yutaka, with the judging panel praising the powerful emotional resonance that the film evoked. Judge Minoru Ohara noted the film’s effectively crafted narrative, which vividly captures the protagonist's shifting emotions. He remarked on the film’s ability to emotionally engage its audience, without leaving them behind in the storytelling. The strategic placement of key motifs within the vertical frame further solidified emotional connections, particularly highlighted during the poignant closing scene where the protagonist, in a moment of introspection, shifts perspective towards their childhood.

Judge Yu Shimmura contributed that the contrast between the ominous red of a darkroom and the vibrant gold of a coastal scene embodies the "creative struggle and genuine joy" of filmmaking. The intimate framing unique to vertical video helped underscore the emotional connections, allowing for raw, authentic moments to shine through. According to Shimmura, Nikon’s cameras uniquely bridge past and present, resonating with all creators' fundamental storytelling roots. He described flare as a top-tier work that marries technical prowess with deep emotional expression flawlessly.

Praise from All Judges

Sayaka Nakane also expressed enthusiasm for the film’s intricate visual composition, indicating a strong passion for the art of filmmaking was present throughout the project. The innovative use of the Nikon AF600 QD camera in the top shot exemplified a nostalgic direction that seamlessly drew viewers into the film’s universe. The precision in transitions, sound design, angle choices, and editing rhythm showed a meticulous attention to detail, which greatly enhanced the film's overall quality. Nakane commended the color grading, allowing viewers to emotionally connect with the narrative naturally and compellingly.

One Scene Category Winner

In addition to the grand prize, the One Scene category recognized 水ヲ象ル (Mizu wo Kaoru) by Tenyu Inaba and Izumi Nakajima, acknowledging the creativity and effort put forth by participants in this new segment.

All nominated and award-winning works are available for viewing on the official website. The Nikon Vertical Movie Award not only celebrates the innovative spirit of modern filmmakers but also elevates the importance of vertical video in storytelling today. With the continual development of such platforms, the future of vertical filmmaking appears both promising and exciting.
