International Congress of Basic Science Kicks Off in Beijing with Over 1000 Participants

International Congress of Basic Science 2026 Launches in Beijing

The International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) for 2026 officially started in Beijing on Sunday, with a gathering of over 1,000 participants, including esteemed scientists, researchers, and emerging scholars from both domestic and international backgrounds.

A Focus on Fundamental Science for Humanity

This year’s congress, themed “Advancing Fundamental Science for Humanity,” promises a rich agenda over its two-week duration, offering more than 500 academic sessions that span various branches and interdisciplinary focuses within the realm of fundamental science. State-of-the-art topics such as generative reasoning powered by large models, computer vision, human-machine interaction, and quantum information will also feature prominently during the event.

Renowned international scientists are set to deliver lectures that delve into fundamental science, while also showcasing reports related to awards in pioneering sciences. This approach aims to disseminate knowledge of the latest global advancements, nurturing collaborative innovation across multiple disciplines.

Engaging Events and Discussions

During the congress, a broad spectrum of activities will take place, including high-level academic debates designed to engage young researchers, along with cultural and scientific exchange programs. Key events such as Mathematics Night, Physics Night, and Engineering Night will bring together laureates of prestigious awards like the Fields Medal and the Turing Award, fostering discussions on contemporary advancements in these fields.

Additionally, the newly established Women in Science Forum will invite remarkable female researchers to share their professional experiences, discussing the challenges and opportunities within scientific research. This initiative is focused on inspiring more women to excel in scientific fields.

Exploring AI and Basic Sciences

The congress will also feature a dedicated forum on basic sciences and AI, where critical barriers and future breakthrough paths in AI theory will be examined, along with trends that shape the sector. Another highlight is the Tsinghua Day, which encourages world-renowned mathematicians and physicists to engage with students at Tsinghua University, inspiring the younger generation to delve into fundamental sciences and embrace the unknown.

Cultural Excursions to Huairou

Moreover, participants will have the opportunity to join the “Explore Huairou” tour, inviting global experts to witness Huairou’s Science City, the International Conference Center, the Mutianyu Great Wall, and the Animation Valley. This excursion not only showcases the innovative dynamics and research ecosystems of this versatile national scientific hub but also highlights the scenic beauty and cultural heritage of Huairou. The tour emphasizes the role of science and technology in rural revitalization, presenting Huairou's achievements and its strategic development as a globally recognized model for scientific and technological integration.

This year marks the fourth edition of the ICBS held in Beijing, organized in collaboration with the Beijing Municipal Government, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Association for Science and Technology, and the International Consortium of Chinese Mathematicians. As the event progresses, it is poised to foster impactful discussions and collaborations that will shape the future of fundamental science worldwide.
