Halal-Friendly Sukiyaki at Chikayo Restaurant
The restaurant "Sukiyaki Chikayo," operated by YT&H Co., Ltd. in Tokyo, Japan, is set to unveil a brand new menu item, "Halal Sukiyaki," starting from May 13, 2025. This innovative dish caters to Muslim travelers visiting Japan, ensuring they can enjoy a safe and scrumptious dining experience.
A Unique Culinary Experience
Sukiyaki Chikayo takes pride in their unique approach to sukiyaki, focusing exclusively on meat without the inclusion of vegetables. This distinguishes them in the competitive culinary landscape. The dish is crafted using only halal-certified Wagyu beef from the Tajima breed, specifically the highly sought-after "Sawai Hime Wagyu," paired with halal soy sauce. Notably, the preparation omits pork and alcohol altogether which makes it 100% halal-friendly.
Traditional Touch
The founder of Chikayo, Yuya Fujiwara, has dedicated this dish to the traditional recipe passed down from his mother, Chikayo. The flavor profile relies solely on sugar and soy sauce, creating a simple yet profound taste that emphasizes the natural umami of the beef. This traditional method ensures that each bite of sukiyaki maximizes flavor while respecting the halal dietary restrictions.
Catering to Muslim Travelers
The demand for halal offerings has been rising steadily in Japan, particularly among visiting Muslims. In response, Chikayo is embarking on an initiative to make their unique sukiyaki experience accessible. Here’s how they ensure halal compliance:
Utilizes Sawai Hime Wagyu, which is bred under strict halal conditions at a facility certified by the Islamic Center Japan. With very few heads raised in Japan, it represents a rare and exquisite flavor.
- - Strictly Halal Ingredients:
The only ingredients employed in this dish are halal soy sauce and sugar, completely eliminating any non-halal elements.
- - Live Cooking Experience:
Customers will experience personalized cooking as dedicated staff prepare each serving in front of them using unique pots and utensils, handled exclusively for the halal menu.
It is worth noting that while Chikayo strives for halal-friendly practices, it is not a fully halal-certified establishment. Instead, it aims to cater thoughtfully to Muslim customers with this new offering.
