Advantech Unveils ASR-D501 AI Companion Computer for Drones

Advantech, a prominent name in the fields of AIoT and Edge Computing, has recently introduced its latest innovation, the ASR-D501. This compact AI companion and mission computer is specifically engineered to facilitate the development of autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). With the significant advancement in drone technology, the ASR-D501 aims to set a new benchmark by providing efficient computing capabilities that enhance operational efficiency and reliability.

The ASR-D501 is powered by the Qualcomm® QCS6490, which offers up to 12 TOPS of AI performance while maintaining a power consumption of less than 10W. This efficiency is pivotal for UAV applications where weight and energy constraints are crucial. The device is designed to support various functionalities, including multi-camera vision, seamless sensor connectivity, flight-controller interface integrations, and an advanced suite of robotics software tailored for drone applications.

One of the key features of the ASR-D501 is its capability to process real-time AI inference, visual perception, and sensor fusion. This means it can execute complex tasks directly onboard the drone without needing constant cloud connectivity. By localizing AI workloads, the device allows the primary flight controller to prioritize real-time stabilization and control, enhancing the safety and efficiency of drone operations.

The ASR-D501 supports an extensive range of AI workloads, including object detection, visual localization, and obstacle awareness. With its ability to process tasks like semantic segmentation and visual inspection, the ASR-D501 is ideal for various industrial applications, including agriculture, surveying, and delivery services.

To cater to sophisticated UAV perception systems, the ASR-D501 is equipped with five 4-lane MIPI-CSI interfaces. This allows for versatile combinations of RGB, mono, stereo, and high-resolution cameras, making it adaptable to different operational needs. The platform also includes various connectivity options such as a 2.5 GbE interface, USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports, and additional onboard interfaces like CAN FD and I2C for connecting various onboard devices like LiDAR and other sensors.

For extended range and beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations, the ASR-D501 is adept at managing Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth, and 4G/5G cellular connectivity. This diversity in communication options supports various telemetry and command-and-control systems, enabling robust remote operation and real-time data transmission during missions.

Furthermore, the ASR-D501 runs on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, paired with the Advantech Robotic Suite for Drone. This suite serves as a pre-integrated environment that streamlines the development of autonomous UAV applications. By connecting high-level ROS 2 applications to flight controller systems like PX4 and ArduPilot, Advantech significantly reduces integration complexity for drone developers, accelerating their path from initial hardware integration to fully autonomous flight applications.

Constructed with industrial-use in mind, the ASR-D501 boasts a compact size of 100 x 60 mm and a lightweight design of around 50 grams, without the heatsink. Its passive and fanless thermal design ensures reliability even in harsh environments, supporting operating conditions from -20°C to 70°C and resisting vibrations at 3.5 Grms.

As Advantech continues to innovate in the UAV computing space, the ASR-D501 stands out as a critical component of their strategy to build a comprehensive computing portfolio. Following the introduction of the ASR-D501, Advantech plans to expand its offerings further to accommodate a range of UAV architectures and mission profiles. Their roadmap includes developing additional platforms based on Qualcomm’s advanced processors, highlighting a commitment to pushing the boundaries of UAV technology.

With the ASR-D501, Advantech is not just offering a product but redefining what is possible for autonomous flight in the UAV sector. Through enhanced processing capabilities, flexible connectivity, and tailored software integration, the ASR-D501 promises to be a game-changer in the world of drones.
