A Unique Collaboration: Sound and Light Event in Tokyo Connects Art and Community

A Unique Collaboration: Sound and Light Event in Tokyo

In a groundbreaking initiative, three prestigious universities in Tokyo—Tokyo University of Music, Tama Art University, and Tokyo Denki University's Faculty of Science and Engineering—are joining forces to present a captivating event titled "KAKERU - Transient Texture Technology". This event, taking place on March 21 and 22, 2026, at the Nakameguro and Daikanyama campus of Tokyo University of Music, aims to bridge the gap between people, streets, and art.

The event kicks off on March 21, Saturday, from 15:00 to 19:00, and continues on March 22, Sunday, from 10:00 to 19:00. This year’s collaboration features approximately 20 students from all three universities, who have been working together to create innovative works that merge music, visual art, and technology.

At the core of this project, students from Tokyo University of Music are responsible for music and sound design, while Tama Art University students contribute through paintings, videos, and objects. Meanwhile, students from Tokyo Denki University are focusing on system design and sensors. Through both face-to-face and online meetings, these young creators are forging concepts and crafting their artworks that explore the intersection of their disciplines.

President Ichiro Nohira of Tokyo University of Music expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, "For two days, the 'Music Path' connecting Nakameguro and Daikanyama will transform into a new stage for art. This project not only showcases the creativity of our students but also serves as a pilot course for our upcoming 'Music Innovation Program,' aimed at developing the next generation of composers and sound creators."

The event will also coincide with an open campus day on March 22, allowing visitors to experience the dynamic learning environment and the creativity fostered through collaboration. The three universities' shared vision of transcending disciplines represents a significant step forward for future partnerships and creativity.

As visitors traverse the "Music Path" and the green Kamakura Street, they will encounter 12 unique artworks that respond to human movement and interaction. These installations are designed to engage the audience in a dialogue about art and its role in urban life. From large, evolving sculptures to works crafted through interaction with the project's staff, each piece aims to fully exploit the vibrant atmosphere of the Nakameguro and Daikanyama campus.

Attendees are encouraged to come freely to enjoy a variety of exhibits showcasing the collaborative efforts of these talented university students. The 3T Project, named after the three participating universities, embodies the spirit of creative cooperation and community connection.

Join us for this free event that promises to be a feast for the senses, where the artistic expressions of music, visuals, and technology intersect with the essence of urban life, creating a bridge between art and the community. We invite everyone to witness the fresh perspectives and vibrant energies that arise from this unique collaboration.
