Natura Resources LLC, a frontrunner in the development of small modular reactors (SMR), has made a significant stride towards advancing its molten salt reactor (MSR) technology by receiving a Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) NE Voucher. This milestone will enable the company to partner with the renowned Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for critical testing processes, marking a substantial step forward in the commercialization of safer nuclear reactor technologies.

The partnership will focus on creating a graphite qualification plan along with identifying the performance characteristics necessary for the design and testing of graphite irradiations with fuel-bearing salts. This plan will leverage existing resources at ORNL, particularly the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), to facilitate rapid neutron irradiation of graphite. Another key aspect of the project includes the development of molten salt irradiation capsules, which will be essential for future irradiation testing.

“This is a thrilling milestone for us as we continue to lead the charge for the construction of the country’s first liquid-fuel SMR, promoting energy independence and advancements in A.I.,” stated Jordan Robison, the Chief Operating Officer of Natura Resources. The GAIN award plays a crucial role in fostering public-private partnerships, which allow companies like Natura to access the technical expertise and specialized facilities of the Department of Energy's national laboratories. The small modular reactors that Natura is working to develop are distinct in that they utilize liquid fuel dissolved in a molten salt mixture, operating under high temperatures and at atmospheric pressure. This innovative design maximizes safety while minimizing waste production and has the ability to utilize a variety of fuel types, including recycled waste. Additionally, Natura's tech has the potential to harvest rare medical isotopes required for critical cancer treatments.

One of the groundbreaking aspects of Natura's modular construction approach is its ability to lower capital costs when compared to traditional reactors. The company’s 100-megawatt commercial-scale reactor is projected to be cost-competitive in the realm of clean, reliable baseload power generation, even when lined up against natural gas alternatives. Furthermore, the efficiency and design of Natura's MSR-100 reactor positions it well as a solution for produced water desalination, a pressing need in regions like the Permian Basin, which experiences substantial oil and gas production activities.

According to projections provided by the Department of Energy, Natura's MSR-1 is on track to become the first Generation IV reactor deployed in the United States. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has already issued a construction permit for the deployment of Natura’s 1-megawatt reactor located at Abilene Christian University, with expectations to commence operations in 2026.

The GAIN Voucher will particularly be utilized to expedite the graphite qualification process for the MSR-100, which promises to fulfill commercial demands for both power generation and produced water desalination solutions. Natura anticipates having its initial commercial-scale 100-megawatt reactor operational by 2030, paving the way for a new era in advanced nuclear technology.
