CordenPharma Expands Aseptic Filling Capacity to 500 Million Injectable Units Annually

CordenPharma's Ambitious Expansion in Sterile Injectable Production

In a strategic move to enhance its position in the global pharmaceuticals market, CordenPharma has announced significant developments at its Caponago facility in Italy. The company is investing a total of €80 million as part of a long-term capital investment program aimed at augmenting its aseptic filling and finishing capabilities for sterile injectables, with a goal of reaching an impressive production capacity of 500 million units annually.

On September 11, 2026, CordenPharma revealed plans to expand its capabilities further following the acquisition of an additional building and land, totaling 11,000 sq. meters. This extension fits seamlessly into the existing operations, increasing the facility's area by over 50%. As a Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO), CordenPharma's new infrastructure will serve innovators seeking tailored outsourcing solutions for their injectable therapies, including those based on peptides, lipid nanoparticles (LNP), small molecules, biologics, and oligonucleotides.

Enhanced Facilities for Future-Ready Production

The newly acquired structure is designed to accommodate a variety of aseptic filling and finishing lines, which will include at least four aseptic filling and finishing lines, four visual inspection lines, and four additional packaging lines. This versatile setup enables options for client-owned production lines, large-scale lyophilization, and autoinjector assembly.

In addition to the new facility, the company has been busy enhancing existing operations over the past two years. This includes the installation of two new aseptic filling and finishing lines in an isolated environment. Among these are:
  • - A combined clinical and small-scale commercial line by Bausch & Ströbel for pre-filled syringes, vials, and cartridges.
  • - A high-speed PFS cartridge line from Syntegon capable of producing over 500,000 units per day.
  • - An automated secondary packaging area for PFS, vials, and ampoules.
  • - Doubling the analytical capacity to accommodate an increasing number of projects in development.

These expansions are slated for completion between mid-2027 and 2028. They reinforce CordenPharma's commitment to maintaining strict sterilization standards and compliance throughout the production of injectable products.

Meeting Growing Global Demand for Sterile Injectables

CordenPharma's investments mark a proactive response to the escalating global need for specialized sterile injectable production, particularly in therapeutic areas like oncology, obesity, diabetes, and inflammatory diseases with complex delivery mechanisms such as GLP-1 peptide therapies, oligonucleotides, LNPs, and biosimilars.

Dr. Michael Quirmbach, President and CEO of CordenPharma Group, noted, "With the support of our shareholders, Astorg, we emphasize our commitment to bolstering sterile injectable manufacturing at CordenPharma Caponago. This strategic investment reinforces our leadership in pharmaceutical production employing complex modalities and enhances our end-to-end sourcing capabilities to meet the growing global demand for outsourced injectables. Our goal is to enable partners to provide vital pharmaceutical products to patients more efficiently in key therapeutic areas."

This comprehensive investment not only boosts capacity but also ensures that CordenPharma can support innovators throughout the lifecycle of their injectable drugs—from early-stage projects to large-scale commercial production. Clients will benefit from integrated solutions that encompass everything from active pharmaceutical ingredients to finished pharmaceutical products, utilizing CordenPharma’s extensive global network and expertise in producing peptides, oligonucleotides, non-viral vectors, and both potent and non-potent APIs.

As a leader in the pharmaceutical contracting landscape, CordenPharma demonstrates its versatility and readiness to adapt to the evolving needs of the healthcare market, ensuring the delivery of high-quality injectable solutions for years to come.
