POWERCHINA Expands Environmental Commitments in Serbia with Sustainable Infrastructure Projects

POWERCHINA Expands Its Commitment in Serbia

In a significant move reflecting its dedication to environmental sustainability, Power Construction Corporation of China, commonly known as POWERCHINA, has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to environmental protection, social responsibility, and corporate governance in Serbia. This announcement follows the recent COP30 climate summit that called for elevated climate action standards globally.

Strengthening Environmental Commitment

The company has underscored its objectives through sustainable infrastructure projects and community engagement. Yang Bo, POWERCHINA’s chief representative in Serbia, stated, "Our dedication to Serbia's dynamic development underscores the tangible impact of ESG practices. Now, more than ever, the world requires infrastructure that is durable, efficient, and inclusive. We will continue to invest in initiatives that promote sustainability alongside our partners, who will in turn support communities and steer the world towards a more hospitable future."

POWERCHINA’s regional headquarters in Eurasia manages operations across 63 countries and regions. Impressively, around 85% of the company's workforce in the area consists of local professionals and specialists from third countries. In Serbia alone, POWERCHINA has generated over 1,500 jobs through various projects, significantly bolstering the local economy.

Since entering the Serbian market in 2012, POWERCHINA has played a crucial role in transforming the country’s critical infrastructure. A notable accomplishment is the construction of Segment B of the Belgrade Bypass, which has improved urban mobility and regional connectivity. As the main contractor of this investment, POWERCHINA has also upgraded sewer systems and water supply systems in residential areas adjacent to the roadway, accelerating construction while enhancing the living standards of residents.

Enhancing Community Connectivity

POWERCHINA is also committed to fostering community connections by signing agreements to construct the first metro line in Belgrade. This long-awaited transport investment aims to alleviate the ongoing issues of traffic congestion and air pollution affecting 1.7 million residents of the city. Since 2019, POWERCHINA has collaborated with Serbian authorities on this metro project, and its completion promises substantial improvements for the urban populace.

Other pivotal projects include the opening of the Gornji Milanovac Bypass, which officially launched in early October 2024, providing a dedicated route for commercial traffic.

Commitment to Social and Cultural Engagement

As part of its social and cultural engagement strategy—an essential aspect of POWERCHINA's mission—the company commenced the construction of the Serbian National Stadium on May 1, 2024. This modern facility aims to support a vibrant Serbian sports industry and offer a platform for fans and athletes alike. Furthermore, POWERCHINA has been instrumental in organizing initiatives such as the "China-Serbia Youth Friendship Dialogue," empowering young people from both nations to explore development opportunities while strengthening bilateral relations.

In recognition of its contributions to Gornji Milanovac's bypass project, POWERCHINA received the Gold Medal of Takovo Uprising, an award established by local authorities to honor exceptional service to the community.

Environmental Focus in Strategy

Environmental protection remains a cornerstone of POWERCHINA's strategy in Europe and Asia. In 2024, the company utilized over 900,000 tons of low-carbon concrete in the region. Globally, POWERCHINA is committed to achieving peak carbon emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.

Beyond Serbia, POWERCHINA is expanding its global portfolio in renewable energy and climate-resilient infrastructure. Recently, the company signed a general contracting agreement with Spain's Viroque Energy for the Arreaz Photovoltaic Power Plant in Cadiz, a 44 MW project expected to deliver 95,000 MWh of clean electricity annually.

Power China remains dedicated to its foundational business philosophy: Integrity, Commitment, and Shared Benefits, while engaging in significant social projects aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
