Taiwanese Elementary Students Visit Okayama University
On June 10, 2026, a delegation of elementary students from three Taiwan schools visited Okayama University, where they participated in a cultural exchange program with the students of Okayama University’s affiliated elementary school. This initiative was suggested by Professor Song Huiling from the National Taiwan Normal University and Professor Ito Toshiyuki, a former faculty member at Okayama University. The proposal took shape during a visit by the professors to Okayama University in May 2025, resulting in collaborative discussions with university officials to formalize this exchange.
Both the Taiwanese schools and Okayama University had previously engaged in two online sessions of exchange in December 2025 and May 2026, preparing for this in-person meeting. The Taiwanese elementary students from Guangxing Elementary School, Houhong Elementary School, and Xinxing Elementary School were excited to interact with the Okayama students across three grade six classes during their visit.
To commence the exchange, a representative student from Okayama's affiliated elementary school welcomed the guests in English, eliciting a mix of excitement and nervousness among the children. However, their anxiety dissipated as they participated in recreational activities, notably games like 'Break Through the Barrier' and 'Fruit Basket', which ultimately led to laughter and a sense of camaraderie.
Following the games, the Taiwanese students showcased their talents by performing familiar Japanese songs from iconic franchises such as Studio Ghibli and Pokémon, which delighted their counterparts, leaving them deeply touched by the cultural sharing.
The exchange further involved practical learning experiences, where the Taiwanese students participated in lessons on foreign languages, Japanese literature, and home economics. They eagerly engaged in calligraphy and sewing activities, providing them with hands-on experience in Japanese educational practices.
The affiliated elementary school's students gained valuable insights and experiences from their interactions with the Taiwanese peers. The will to grow through cultural exchange emphasizes Okayama University’s role as a vibrant center for educational collaboration and research innovation.
The event not only fostered understanding and communication between the participants but reaffirmed Okayama University’s commitment to nurturing global connections through education, culture, and shared experiences. Future initiatives are anticipated as the university continues to strengthen its role as a core institution promoting open collaboration with diverse educational institutions.
This cultural exchange exemplifies the enriching experiences that can arise from international cooperation in education. As Okayama University embarks on this promising path of engagement, more opportunities for students to learn from each other through direct interaction are expected to flourish in the years to come, setting a strong foundation for lasting relationships and mutual learning across borders.
Conclusion
This successful visit illustrates the importance of cross-cultural exchanges in education, particularly among younger generations. As Okayama University continues to build bridges with international peers, the focus on collaboration, understanding, and educational sharing showcases the transformative power of such initiatives.
