Kansas City University Welcomes a New Academic Leader

In an exciting development for the Kansas City academic landscape, Kansas City University (KCU) has announced the appointment of Abiodun E. Akinwuntan, Ph.D., MBA, MPH, MIH, as the new provost and executive vice president for Academic, Research, and Clinical Affairs. Akinwuntan, who will officially take office on August 31, joins KCU from the University of Kansas Medical Center (KU Medical Center), where he has made formidable contributions since 2016 as the dean of the School of Health Professions.

Achievements at KU Medical Center

Dr. Akinwuntan's tenure at KU Medical Center has been marked by impressive achievements. Under his leadership, external research funding surged nearly 19 times, reflecting his ability to garner resources crucial for academic growth. He spearheaded the establishment of eight new academic programs and three interdisciplinary degree tracks, all while achieving continuous enrollment growth over the past 11 years. These efforts were complemented by securing approximately $18 million in philanthropic support, showcasing his aptitude for fostering partnerships that benefit educational institutions.

In his new role, Akinwuntan will play a pivotal role in shaping the academic direction at KCU. He will oversee critical strategic priorities and program innovations across the university's colleges and campuses. His responsibilities will also emphasize the enhancement of research initiatives and supporting both faculty and student success. Additionally, he aims to strengthen community partnerships that exemplify KCU's commitment to making a meaningful impact on health care education and the well-being of local communities.

A Distinguished Career

Akinwuntan’s career encompasses an impressive range of educational accomplishments and leadership roles. Before joining KU Medical Center, he served at Augusta University in several capacities, including associate dean for Research in the College of Allied Health Sciences. He is highly regarded as a rehabilitation scientist with over 20 years of experience in higher education and health professions education. His educational background includes degrees from notable institutions across multiple continents, including Nigeria, Belgium, and the United States, reflecting his commitment to academic excellence.

Throughout his career, Akinwuntan has received national and international accolades for his leadership and service, including recognition as a Fellow of the National Academies of Practice and the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. His contributions extend to various committees, such as the Lancet Neurology Commission on Neurorehabilitation, and he has played significant roles in shaping health policies and education.
