Bhuwan Ribhu: Champion for Children's Rights

Bhuwan Ribhu, the prominent activist and founder of Just Rights for Children (JRC), was bestowed with the esteemed Medal of Honour by the World Jurists Association (WJA) during the 2025 World Law Congress held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This prestigious event, taking place from May 4 to 6, attracted over 1,500 legal professionals and over 300 speakers from more than 70 countries, marking a significant gathering of minds aimed at discussing the pressing issues of our time.

As a dedicated advocate against child marriage and child trafficking, Ribhu has tirelessly fought for the rights of children for more than two decades. His pioneering use of the rule of law to combat modern forms of slavery, forced labor, sexual abuse, and child marriage has positioned him as a vital figure in international human rights advocacy. Throughout his career, he has successfully initiated legal reforms that bolster protections for vulnerable children.

In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Ribhu emphasized, "Children should never have to fight for justice alone. The law must be their shield, and justice must be their right." His words resonated deeply, echoing the urgent need for more robust legal measures to protect children globally.

Javier Cremades, the managing director of the WJA, praised Ribhu's unwavering belief in justice as a cornerstone of democracy. "Bhuwan firmly believes that justice is the most solid pillar of democracy. He has devoted his life to securing justice for children and women who are victims of sexual crimes, both in his country and around the world. His efforts have rescued hundreds of thousands of children and women and established legal frameworks that will protect future generations. This award recognizes his tireless labor to create a safer and fairer world for children through the power of law," stated Cremades.

The Just Rights for Children network stands as the largest civil society coalition globally, uniting over 250 partner organizations that work within the criminal and social justice systems. With a presence in India, Nepal, Kenya, and the United States, JRC aims for a comprehensive approach through legal interventions and community engagement.

Since April 2023, JRC has recorded impressive results, showcasing the potential of innovation and determination led by India:
  • - Over 85,000 children rescued from trafficking
  • - More than 300,000 child marriages prevented or halted
  • - Over 34,000 survivors of sexual abuse received legal and psychosocial support
  • - More than 54,000 cases filed against child traffickers

Ribhu remarked, "These figures are not just statistics; they represent lives saved, futures restored, and our unwavering commitment to defending our children." His groundbreaking efforts and remarkable success rates speak volumes about the vital work being done in the realm of children's rights advocacy.

Through his dedication, Bhuwan Ribhu highlights the critical importance of protecting children and empowering them to live free from fear and harm. As he continues his journey, he serves as a beacon of hope for those striving to make a difference in the lives of the most vulnerable members of society. The recognition he received at the World Law Congress not only honors his past achievements but also galvanizes further action against the grave injustices faced by children around the world.
