Explore the Art of Tea: A Unique Exhibit at Geidai Art Plaza

Explore the Art of Tea at Geidai Art Plaza

From June 20, 2026, the Geidai Art Plaza will be transformed into a unique gallery showcasing the exhibition, "The Art of Tea: Cha no Gei". This event stems from a collaborative project between Shogakukan and Tokyo University of the Arts, held in the heart of Ueno in Taito Ward, Tokyo.

This remarkable exhibition aims to highlight the aesthetic sensibilities inherent in the Japanese tea ceremony, a tradition deeply embedded in the culture of Japan. A total of 18 artists affiliated with or alumni of Tokyo University of the Arts will display and sell their works.

The exhibition will feature a diverse range of artworks, combining both two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces, allowing visitors to experience the relationship between the space, the art, and the viewer. Entry is free, and photography is encouraged, making it an accessible event for all.

The renowned tea philosophy in Japan, rooted in the ideas of 'Cha no Yu' or tea ceremony, goes beyond mere customs; it invites a profound exploration of the relationship between people and art. As Okakura Kakuzō, the first principal of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (the predecessor of Tokyo University of the Arts), stated in his book, The Book of Tea, the tea ceremony embraces a way of thinking that connects art with life.

This exhibition at Geidai Art Plaza, designed as a single 'Tokonoma' (a traditional alcove for displaying art), will showcase works from ten artists each focusing on flat and three-dimensional creations. Additionally, it will feature pieces that embody the techniques and philosophies of tea, centering around expertly crafted tea bowls that reflect Japan's unique aesthetic of beauty found in details.

By inviting visitors to delve into The Art of Tea, the exhibition offers a special perspective on the enjoyment of Japanese art. Participants will be able to explore how different artworks interact harmoniously, fostering a profound connection between the artwork and the observer.
