Exploring Antarctica: A Special Talk and Film Screening in Tokyo

An Invitation to Explore Antarctica

On December 11, 2025, a unique event will take place at Shimokita Ekimae Cinema K2 in Setagaya, Tokyo, featuring two renowned adventurers, Keizo Funatsu and Yasunaga Ogita. This special occasion is not just a film screening, but a call to action regarding the current environmental challenges our planet faces.

The Legacy of the 1990 Trans-Antarctica Expedition

In 1990, an international team consisting of members from six countries successfully completed the first-ever crossing of Antarctica using dog sleds. This remarkable journey began in July 1989 and culminated in reaching the South Pole on December 11 of that same year. The expedition covered approximately 6,040 kilometers, emphasizing the importance of environmental awareness and peace in a continent that notably lacks borders.

The message from this expedition, 'THINK SOUTH,' continues to resonate as we witness the profound impact of climate change. The very ice regions traversed by these adventurers are now under threat, disappearing rapidly due to global warming. Their story sheds light on the urgent need for action to address environmental issues on a global scale.

THINK SOUTH FOR THE NEXT Project

To honor the legacy of this incredible journey and to educate future generations about the importance of sustainability, the THINK SOUTH FOR THE NEXT project was established in 2019. Its mission is to raise awareness about the current environmental crises and the significance of preserving our planet for future inhabitants. You can learn more about the project by visiting their official website at think-south.com.

The event will be held on December 11 from 9:00 PM to 11:30 PM. The program will include:
  • - A talk session featuring Keizo Funatsu and Yasunaga Ogita, discussing their unique experiences and perspectives.
  • - A screening of the documentary film, 'Trans-Antarctica Expedition,' which chronicles their journey and the vital messages it conveys about the environment.

The attendance fee is 1,800 yen, and the seating capacity is limited to 71 participants, so early registration is recommended.

Meet the Adventurers

Keizo Funatsu: After crossing Greenland by dog sled in 1988, he joined the Antarctic expedition. He has also participated in mid-distance dog sled racing in Alaska. Currently, he serves as the general manager of NIKI Hills Winery in Hokkaido.

Yasunaga Ogita: Known for achieving the world's first solo trek from the northernmost point of Greenland to Canada, he also set a record by reaching the South Pole solo and unsupported, becoming the first Japanese to do so in 2018. In 2021, he opened the 'Adventure Research Institute Bookstore' in Kanagawa.

Radio Feature Prior to the Event

In anticipation of the event, Keizo Funatsu will also share insights about the state of our planet's environment on the radio show 'Bizsta REPORT' on TOKYO FM on December 6th, from 7:25 AM to 7:30 AM. This discussion will provide listeners with a unique perspective from an adventurer's point of view.
