Discovering Plant Science at Okayama University
On August 1, 2025, Okayama University’s Institute of Resource Plant Science, a part of the Graduate School of Advanced Science and Technology, welcomed high school students to its Summer Science School (SSS). This event aimed to provide students with an immersive experience in the exciting realm of plant science through hands-on experiments.
Engaging Hands-On Learning
The day began with a welcoming guidance session, followed by the students splitting into small groups based on their course preferences. Under the supervision of both faculty members and graduate students, the participants tackled a variety of experiments that are rarely covered in traditional classroom settings. These included comparative observations of wheat and barley, microscopic studies of panicle development, and plant hormone quantification using mass spectrometry. Additionally, students engaged in genetic engineering by learning DNA cutting and recombination techniques.
The afternoon sessions included more fascinating experiments such as:
- - Electrophoresis to separate chloroplast proteins
- - Hydroponic experiments on silicon absorption in rice while employing confocal laser microscopy for protein transport observation
- - Observation of crop pathogenic viruses and bacteria through transmission electron microscopy
- - Measurement of plant immune responses related to reactive oxygen species
- - Behavior observation of bacteria that prefer methanol
- - Studies on plant cell division using fluorescent microscopy
Fostering Dialogue and Future Aspirations
Throughout the day, students were encouraged to engage in informal discussions with researchers and graduate students during breaks. Topics included the joys and challenges of a research career, experiences in university and graduate school, and advice on shaping future pathways in science. The active exchanges highlighted the students' enthusiasm and their curiosity about potential careers in scientific fields.
Feedback collected at the end of the day revealed a high satisfaction level among participants. Many expressed hopes of returning next year, indicating a positive response to the program. Comments included, "I was happy to have access to equipment we don't use in school" and "I developed a great interest in plants, which I want to consider for my future studies." Their smiles reflected the joy of discovery and accomplishment through the experiments, culminating in a ceremony where each student received a “Future PhD” certificate from the director of the institute.
Commitment to Future Generations
Okayama University’s Institute of Resource Plant Science remains committed to providing educational opportunities and platforms for young, aspiring scientists. The Summer Science School was not only a day of experiments but also an integral part of nurturing the next generation of researchers. As a regionally significant and distinctive research university, Okayama University continues to advance its academic achievements and contributions to society, encouraging future students to explore the world of science.
We look forward to ongoing innovative initiatives at Okayama University, fostering a spirit of curiosity and collaboration among young minds interested in plant science.
