Starbucks Celebrates 30 Years in Japan with New Sumatra Masa Depan Coffee Launch

Starbuck's New Offering: Sumatra Masa Depan Coffee

As Starbucks marks its 30th anniversary in Japan, it is excitingly poised to launch a brand-new coffee blend named Sumatra Masa Depan on July 22, 2026. This special coffee is the result of collaborative efforts between our partners, also known as employees, and the dedicated coffee teams from Seattle and Japan. It serves as a heartfelt thank you to our loyal customers and a welcoming introduction to those new to Starbucks coffee.

A Blend Born from Employee Voices

The essence of Sumatra Masa Depan captures the vision of the future coffee experience that Starbucks aspires to share. The coffee development process began by gathering thoughts from our Japanese partners through a nationwide survey focusing on “the future of coffee”. These insights laid the groundwork for the collaboration between the coffee teams in Japan and Seattle, who meticulously selected the bean types and crafting recipes. The term Masa Depan translates to “future” in Bahasa Indonesia, directly reflecting the commitment to innovation and customer engagement.

Flavor Profile Inspired by Sumatra

This coffee incorporates two distinct beans sourced from the Sumatra Island in Indonesia, a region integral to Starbucks since we opened in 1971. Our master roasters have created a Blonde Roast that accentuates the vibrant characteristics of Sumatra's beans, delivering a bright and flavorful cup. You'll first experience a fruity aroma, soon followed by rich flavors reminiscent of roasted green tea and umami notes, culminating in a refreshing, tropical finish with lingering sweetness. Collaborating with a new generation of farmers, our aim is to bring quality coffee that everyone's palate can enjoy.

Artistic Expression through Packaging

At Starbucks, we believe that coffee should convey freedom—freedom to tell your story and savor it in your unique way. This philosophy is reflected in the CANVAS packaging design, which combines a minimalist look in white and silver with elements that represent coffee trees, cherries, and the processes of sun and water. The light green text symbolizes our support for the young farmers who are the future of coffee production.

Artists who sampled Sumatra Masa Depan expressed their inspirations through captivating artworks featured on the packaging. Daisuke Kondo, Shogo Ota, and nico ito contributed pieces illustrating themes of connection through aroma, hidden delights of discovery, and the blossoming excitement inspired by coffee.

Accessibility for All Coffee Lovers

To ensure that this special blend caters to a wider audience, we have introduced various formats for purchase. Options include a 250g bag of whole beans for ¥2,580, 100g of ground coffee for those who might be new to brewing at home for ¥1,240, and Starbucks Origami® Personal Drip Coffee packets available at just ¥280. These choices allow customers to enjoy the flavors of Sumatra Masa Depan effortlessly.

Moving into the Future with New Brewing Techniques

The introduction of the Clover Vertica, an innovative brewing machine that extracts the special characteristics of each bean, represents a significant step in enhancing the coffee experience. It ensures each cup is tailored to individual preferences and occasions as each order is made fresh with the beans ground on demand. Customers have the chance to select from various roasts and personalized offerings, guided by our trained partners who will advise on the perfect choice based on individual desires. This non-self-service, fresh brewing method is unique to Starbucks, promising a delightful encounter with every cup.

As we embark on this exciting journey into the next 30 years, we invite you to enjoy your first cup of Sumatra Masa Depan and discover the endless possibilities within your coffee experiences. See you at Starbucks!
