On May 13, 2026, the Global South Media and Think Tank Forum's Chinese-Arab Partnership Conference was inaugurated in Cairo, Egypt, featuring discussions centered on unity, collaboration, and a shared future for Chinese and Arab nations. Under the theme 'Pooling Wisdom and Committing to a New Journey', the event served as a platform for leaders and representatives from various sectors to exchange insights and strategies for fostering closer ties.
One of the highlights was the keynote speech delivered by Zhong Ren, the Chairman of Sinopec Group, who was also honored with the Global South Outstanding Contribution Award. In his address, Zhong emphasized the historical friendship between China and the Arab states, which dates back more than a millennium and has continuously evolved. He remarked on the complementary nature and mutual inspiration of Chinese and Arab civilizations, providing a vivid example of dialogue and mutual learning across cultures.
Zhong pointed out that recent developments in Chinese-Arab relations reflect a vibrant historical opportunity, fueled by top-level diplomatic engagement. He cited a report from Xinhua News Agency that identified achievements and prospects for Sino-Arab cooperation in the new era, arguing that such partnerships contribute stability and reliability to the global landscape, setting a benchmark for South-South cooperation.
Sinopec, as a key player in this partnership, reiterated its commitment to energy security and collaborative economic development. Zhong noted, 'Energy security is synonymous with common safety, and energy development is about coordinated growth.' The company has been actively involved in critical projects, including the Yanbu refinery in Saudi Arabia and the Al-Zour refinery in Kuwait, while also expanding its oil and natural gas business.
The corporation is also investing in digital transformations and developing an independent AI system, along with an international multimedia communication matrix to support the narrative of the Global South. Moreover, Sinopec has established 'Silk Road Book Houses' in eight Arab countries, donating over 10,000 books and training more than 100,000 local professionals and technicians. This initiative aims to foster dialogue and interpersonal relationships between China and the Arab region.
Looking ahead, Zhong expressed optimism for the forthcoming second China-Arab States Summit, predicting it would invigorate Sino-Arab relations and enhance South-South cooperation further. Sinopec is eager to partner with all stakeholders to deepen these relationships and build a closer Sino-Arab community with a shared future.
Approximately 250 representatives from over 110 media organizations, think tanks, government institutions, and international entities gathered for this two-day event, co-hosted by Xinhua and the League of Arab States, marking a significant step in fostering collaborative efforts across the Chinese and Arab nations' media landscape.
