Company Musashino's Innovative Approach to Employee Wellbeing
In a keen effort to enhance employee satisfaction and overall health, Musashino Corporation, based in Koganei, Tokyo, has embarked on an impressive initiative known as the "Walking Project." The initiative, spearheaded by the Employee Satisfaction Improvement Team, ran from June 1 to July 31, 2026, and witnessed participation from a diverse group of 112 employees, ranging from regular staff to executive members.
Background of the Project
As a certified "Health Management Excellent Corporation," Musashino prioritizes employee health as a vital corporate asset. Recognizing challenges posed by increased digitalization and remote work—often leading to inactivity and diminished mental wellness—the Walking Project was designed to tackle these issues by incorporating team building and gamification tactics. Through these methods, the initiative aimed to foster voluntary changes in employee behavior toward a healthier lifestyle.
Musashino has organized various team activities that break departmental barriers, including the Customer Satisfaction Improvement Team and the Career Plan Team. Among these, the Employee Satisfaction Improvement Team launched this particular project to promote physical activity and enhance internal communication via a competition-based format, both in team and individual categories.
Project Duration: June 1 - July 31, 2026
Total Participants: 112 (voluntary; all levels of staff involved)
Team Structure: 10 teams (11-12 members each)
Measurement Method: Average weekly steps calculated for each team, competing over two months.
Project Outcomes
According to the guidelines established by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the recommended daily step goal for adults is 8,000 steps. However, actual average steps recorded among Japanese individuals typically fall short—around 7,700 for men and 6,500 for women. This walking initiative resulted in remarkable achievements, with teams not only meeting but significantly exceeding these standards.
Winning Team's Record: Average of 9,424 steps per person per day (surpassing the recommended value)
Top 4 Teams: Averaged more than 8,000 steps per day
All Teams: Surpassed an average of 7,000 steps per day
