Recent Insights from NTT Docomo's NISA Awareness Survey
In an effort to assess the current state of NISA (Nippon Individual Savings Account) usage and the need for consultation, NTT Docomo collaborated with Monex Securities to conduct a comprehensive survey. This study involved a diverse sample of 1,000 individuals aged 20 to 69 across Japan, revealing both promising and concerning trends regarding NISA's recognition and utilization.
Survey Highlights
The survey uncovered several critical points:
1. High Awareness, Low Participation
One of the most striking findings is that awareness of NISA has reached approximately 80%. Yet, only about 44.9% have actually started utilizing the system. This significant gap indicates that while many are aware of NISA, there is a considerable difference in understanding its benefits and processes.
2. Desire for Utilization Among Non-users
Interestingly, around 35.2% of those who do not currently participate in NISA expressed a desire to start using it. However, over half (52.5%) of these individuals have been contemplating opening an account for over a year but have not taken any steps towards it. This suggests that many potential users are unsure about when or how to begin their NISA journey.
3. Importance of Accessible Consultation
The survey also highlighted the role of accessible financial advice in encouraging NISA participation. It was found that those who openly discuss financial matters are more likely to engage with NISA, with 45.7% of NISA users having consulted with a third party before starting. This reflects a potential barrier for those without a supportive network.
4. Lack of Local Consultation Resources
A significant 82.6% of NISA non-users reported feeling that there are no local places to seek advice on NISA. Furthermore, approximately 52.3% expressed a need for easily accessible consultation resources. This indicates a clear demand for greater availability of financial advisory services, especially regarding investment plans like NISA.
Survey Period and Methodology
The survey was conducted from August 5 to August 8, 2025, by Accenture, targeting 1,000 men and women from various backgrounds across Japan. It aimed to provide a clear view of public sentiment towards NISA and identify the existing gaps in understanding and accessibility.
In summary, while the awareness of NISA is commendably high, the actual participation rates remain low, primarily due to a lack of accessible consultation resources. This gap in support not only hampers personal financial growth but also illustrates the necessity for improved access to financial education and advice. Moving forward, both NTT Docomo and Monex Securities are taking action by offering support services at NTT Docomo shops for those interested in NISA and asset management. This initiative aims to facilitate the opening of NISA accounts and financial discussions, ultimately enhancing financial literacy and participation across the country.
