Okayama University Implements Advanced Curriculum for Technical Staff Training in Flow Cytometry

Enhancing Technical Expertise in Flow Cytometry at Okayama University



Okayama University, located in Okayama City, recently held an advanced training program as part of its TC College curriculum focused on medical engineering. This initiative aims to boost research support capabilities among its technical staff through an in-depth exploration of flow cytometry.

On August 4 and 7, 2025, the program featured a combination of online lectures and hands-on hybrid training. Participants included technical staff members from Okayama University and Gunma University. The first day comprised online lectures that introduced basic concepts, while the second day provided practical training with a focus on using the university’s newly acquired flow cytometer, the CytoFlex.

The seminars were led by Yukinari Isomoto, a seasoned technical professional from the university's department of medical technology. He walked participants through the various types and structures of flow cytometers, along with the fundamental principles behind data analysis. A special emphasis was placed on the features and operational techniques for the CytoFlex, which was recently introduced into the university's facilities.

During the practical session, participants were able to witness the measurement process using real samples provided by the university's research offices. They also had the opportunity to interact with Isomoto as he conducted live demonstrations, making the workshop lively and very informative. Additionally, explanations about the inner workings and measurement methods for the cell sorter, FACSAria3, were presented, fostering a comprehensive understanding of these crucial research tools.

One of the participating technical staff, Takahiro Fujii, expressed his gratitude for the program, stating, “I've always wanted to learn more about this field, but found it challenging to grasp the data analysis aspects through self-study. This course provided thorough explanations and practical exercises that clarified many of my uncertainties.” He also admires Isomoto's depth of understanding regarding the equipment, recognizing the necessity for further knowledge on his own instruments.

Another participant, Miki Ika, highlighted the uniqueness of the training, stating, “The flow cytometer was previously unknown to me, and I found the learning experience to be fascinating. Gaining knowledge about equipment that is not often accessible is one of the strengths of the TC College curriculum. I'm thankful to Isomoto and the TC College staff for their detailed guidance.”

The event concluded on a high note, promoting not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills that can be applied in ongoing research efforts.

The Vice Director and Chief Technical Officer, Yoshihito Sato, further emphasized the importance of in-depth understanding in technical operations. He remarked, “As research equipment becomes more advanced, it's easy for technical staff to mistakenly believe they have mastered a tool by merely learning operational procedures. True competence comes from understanding the underlying principles and concepts.” Sato assured that efforts to enhance the capabilities of technical staff at Okayama University will continue, encouraging everyone to look forward to the future advancements of the university’s comprehensive technical department.

Looking ahead, more workshops will be held as part of the curriculum, aligned with student enrollment in the medical engineering track. Okayama University Technical Department aims to strengthen research, education, and clinical support through collaboration among technical staff and diverse training programs. This effort strategically harnesses areas of expertise to further enhance the university’s role as a key research institution in the region.
