Rally to Read 100: Inspiring Children's Literacy Across the Nation

As part of its commitment to fostering children's literacy, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) has kicked off its fifth annual nationwide reading engagement initiative, "Rally to Read 100." This year, the exciting campaign runs from October 1, 2025, until March 31, 2026, coinciding with RIF's significant 60th anniversary celebration in 2026. With a mission to inspire a newfound love for reading, RIF invites children across the country to participate in a thrilling challenge to read 100 books over six months.

Building on Previous Success

This year's initiative builds on the momentum gained from last year's campaign, which successfully engaged over 600,000 children in exploring the world of literature. The Rally to Read 100 program aims to create an inclusive community of readers by providing monthly reading themes, exclusive read-aloud sessions from celebrated authors, and opportunities for entries into nationwide book sweepstakes. To enhance the experience, RIF will also offer free literacy resources for families and educators, ensuring that kids remain engaged regardless of their reading environment.

As part of the campaign's kickoff, a warm welcome video from award-winning author and songwriter Emily Arrow has been released to excite and motivate young readers. This year's initiative is generously supported by partners like Barnes & Noble, Macy's, and the Nellie Mae Education Foundation. Furthermore, Penguin Random House serves as the exclusive publishing partner, fueling the campaign with a wealth of reading material.

The Importance of Reading Aloud

Recent research indicates a decline in the number of parents reading aloud to their children, a practice widely regarded for enhancing vocabulary, improving listening skills, and nurturing a lasting love for literature. RIF aims to reverse this troubling trend by emphasizing the significance of reading together through the Rally to Read initiative. According to Alicia Levi, RIF's President and CEO, this campaign is much more than a mere reading challenge; it represents a movement that ignites curiosity, enriches literacy abilities, and fosters community connections centered around the wonder of books.

Collaborative and Enriching Activities

The Rally to Read 100 program encompasses several interactive elements designed to engage children directly. Participants are invited to undertake the challenge of reading 100 books in six months, with supportive resources readily available. Among other perks, 100 randomly selected educators will be awarded 100 high-quality books each, totaling a remarkable 10,000 books for schools and youth-serving organizations.

Each month will boast a specific theme, accompanied by engaging read-aloud videos from best-selling authors and illustrators. Topics will range from community and imagination to wellness and nature. Additional resources, including activities in Spanish, will enrich the reading experience for every participant.

To culminate the campaign, a nationwide celebration will take place in March 2026, during National Reading Month. This live event, broadcast from the iconic Barnes & Noble Union Square in New York City, will include special guests and festivities designed to spread the joy of reading even further.

Featured Read-Alouds and Authors

RIF has curated an impressive lineup of books to support the monthly themes from its publishing partners. Notable read-alouds include Drew Daywalt's "The Day the Crayons Made Friends" in October, inspiring themes focused on community. In November, Matthew Cordell will read from "To See an Owl," tying into nature. The festive month of December will feature Jan Brett’s beloved tale, "The Nutcracker." Each session not only entertains but also underscores the importance of each theme and the joys of reading.

Partnerships Driving Change

RIF proudly acknowledges the contributions of its Inspiration Partners, such as Barnes & Noble, Macy's, and the Nellie Mae Education Foundation. Moreover, promotional partners including the American Association of School Librarians, Every Child a Reader, Children's Book Council, and others contribute to the campaign’s outreach and engagement.

Reading Is Fundamental remains dedicated to constructing a nation of lifelong readers, inspiring joy and critical literacy skills in all children. Since its inception in 1966, RIF has provided nearly 430 million books and reading resources to over 212 million children, positively impacting their lives and learning journeys. As RIF enters its 60th year, it remains steadfast in its mission to combat the U.S. literacy crisis and ensure that every child has access to the fundamental tools for success in reading and beyond.
