A recent survey conducted by WIS, which supports lifelong wellness for women, uncovers some concerning trends regarding exercise among women during and post-pregnancy. This study highlights not only the high percentage of women who cease physical activities during pregnancy but also the significant barriers they face in resuming exercise afterward.

Overview of the Study


Between February 27 and March 31, 2025, WIS conducted an internet-based survey involving 145 postpartum women who had been exercising regularly prior to pregnancy. These women were asked to reflect on their experiences and challenges regarding physical activities during pregnancy and after childbirth. What emerged was a clear picture of the impact of pregnancy on women's exercise routines and the underlying social and psychological issues that need addressing.

1. Interruptions in Exercise: The statistics reveal a startling 59% of women reported interrupting their exercise routines in the early stages of pregnancy, with only 29% managing to continue exercising into the later stages. The overwhelming influence of pregnancy as a life event significantly disrupts established exercise habits for many women.

Need for Supportive Environment: A notable observation was many women felt the need for better information and supportive environments that would allow them to continue exercising safely during pregnancy. There is a fundamental worry about the safety of their baby and whether they could safely engage in physical activities, indicating a gap in accessible information and safe facilities for pregnant women.

3. Challenges in Resuming Postpartum Exercise: Among the women surveyed, one in three reported abandoning their postpartum exercise efforts. Difficulties such as physical burdens from childbirth and balancing childcare with personal wellness needs were significant barriers.

The Importance of Support


The study sheds light on the necessity of robust support systems for women both during pregnancy and postpartum. Many women expressed a desire for more expert support (50.3%) and facilities tailored for pregnant women (44.1%). Additionally, time constraints (93.8%) and lack of childcare options (60.4%) emerged as primary reasons preventing resumption of exercise after childbirth.

The insights gleaned from this study align with data from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare and the Sports Agency, which show that a mere 20% of women aged 20-40 maintain regular exercise throughout their lives. This shows a clear trend where motherhood and pregnancy create significant lifestyle changes that need to be understood and addressed.

1. Promoting Community Support: There is an imperative need for community-wide support structures that encourage women to maintain physical health through accessible group activities and childcare solutions.

2. Increasing Professional Guidance: Women would greatly benefit from guidance provided by trained professionals such as physiotherapists and fitness trainers who specialize in pregnancy and postpartum health.

3. Creating Exercise-Friendly Environments: Facilities that create a safe and inviting atmosphere for both mothers and babies would help mitigate fears and increase participation.

4. Raising Awareness and Providing Information: Spreading awareness about safe exercises during pregnancy and after childbirth can empower women, making them more willing to engage in physical activity.
