Chipotle Welcomes Jason Kidd as New COO Amid Leadership Transition

In an important organizational shift, Chipotle Mexican Grill has announced the appointment of Jason Kidd as its new Chief Operating Officer, effective from May 19, 2025. This development comes as part of the company’s evolving leadership strategy and follows the impending retirement of respected executive Jack Hartung, the current President and Chief Strategy Officer.

A New Leader for Operations

Jason Kidd is highly regarded in the industry, bringing over 25 years of diverse experience in operations and retail management. Before joining Chipotle, he served as the Global Chief Operating Officer for Taco Bell, showcasing his capability in large-scale restaurant operations. His previous roles include serving as President of Hearing Lab Technology, LLC and leading operations for 99 Cents Only Stores, where he also held positions of increasing responsibility, covering operations, merchandising, planning, and supply chain over a remarkable 20-year tenure at Sam's Club. With this wealth of experience, Kidd is expected to oversee the operations of nearly 3,800 restaurants worldwide, directly reporting to CEO Scott Boatwright from the Newport Beach headquarters.

Boatwright expressed his confidence in Kidd’s strategic insight and operational expertise, stating, “Kidd brings proven accomplishments and a wealth of knowledge that will further support our 130,000 team members in delivering exceptional hospitality to our guests.” Kidd himself expressed gratitude for joining Chipotle’s leadership team, emphasizing his enthusiasm for enhancing the experiences of both team members and customers. He noted the current initiatives to build a guest-centered culture and modernize operational processes as both exciting and promising for the brand's future.

The Transition of Jack Hartung

After nearly 25 years with Chipotle, Jack Hartung will step down from his role as President and Chief Strategy Officer on June 1, 2025, transitioning to the position of senior advisor until early March 2026. Hartung's tenure has been marked by significant milestones, including the opening of 3,700 restaurants in seven countries. He remarked on the company’s effective leadership and strategic planning, highlighting the ongoing potential for growth and innovation in the fast-casual dining sector.

“I have tremendous confidence that we have the right leaders and strategies in place to drive value for our guests, employees, and shareholders,” said Hartung. His contributions over nearly three decades have indeed been substantial, making him a respected figure within Chipotle and the broader restaurant industry. Boatwright commended Hartung's extraordinary legacy, stating, “Jack's contributions to Chipotle over nearly three decades are immeasurable, and I extend my sincerest gratitude for the instrumental role he played in ensuring Chipotle always delivered on its purpose.”

Strategic Restructuring

As part of this smooth transition, other adjustments within Chipotle's leadership have been made. Curt Garner, the Chief Customer and Technology Officer, will expand his role to oversee supply chain operations as the newly titled President, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer. Additionally, Chris Brandt, the Chief Brand Officer, will lead a cross-functional team aimed at enhancing menu and ingredient processes. These strategic movements emphasize Chipotle’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.

A Vision for the Future

Chipotle Mexican Grill aims to continue cultivating a better world by serving responsibly sourced, delicious food while maintaining its reputation as a leader in the food industry. With its extensive reach encompassing nearly 3,800 locations across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates, the company is committed to enhancing customer experiences and is pioneering advancements in digital and sustainable practices.
