Exploring Middle Eastern Dynamics: A Lecture by Professor Kazuo Takahashi

In a time marked by significant unrest and confusion stemming from U.S. policies under President Trump, the situation in Palestine, particularly Gaza, has deteriorated considerably. Following a temporary ceasefire, hostilities have reignited, resulting in further assault on civilians, including those involved in healthcare and humanitarian efforts. The number of casualties is increasing daily, painting a grim picture of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.

Compounding the distressing situation in Gaza, tensions continue to rise in the West Bank, reflecting the pervasive instability throughout the Middle East. Notably, the relationship between the United States and Iran has far-reaching implications, potentially affecting geopolitics and the trajectory of events unfolding in the region.

To shed light on these pressing issues, renowned international political scholar Professor Kazuo Takahashi, an emeritus professor at Open University Japan, will deliver a lecture titled "Iran, America, and the Middle East Post-Gaza." Professor Takahashi is well-respected for his extensive work on Middle Eastern affairs and has authored several insightful publications, including "Why Does Gaza Become a Battlefield? - The Underbelly of the Israel-Palestine Conflict" and "Now I Get It! Hamas and the Gaza War."

The event is scheduled for June 22, 2025, from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM at the University of Tokyo’s Komaba Campus in Lecture Hall B1F of the 21KOMCEE WEST building. The doors will open at 3:00 PM, and attendees can reach the venue by taking the Keio Inokashira Line to Komaba-Todai-Mae Station, then walking approximately five minutes from the main gate of the university.

Participation is free; however, advance registration is required on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested individuals can register through the Peatix link here or contact the organizing committee by providing their name, phone number, and number of participants.

This event is co-sponsored by the University of Tokyo Center for Middle Eastern Studies, aiming to foster understanding and dialogue on the complex issues surrounding the Middle East. We look forward to welcoming everyone as we delve into discussions about geopolitical factors that shape the region and explore potential paths towards stability and peace.
