Metacon Expands into Morocco with Innovative Wind Power Hydrogen Project

Metacon's Strategic Entry into the Moroccan Market

In a significant development for the renewable energy sector, Metacon AB has announced its entry into the Moroccan market by securing a contract for a groundbreaking wind power-to-hydrogen pilot plant. Originally revealed in a press release dated March 19, 2025, this initiative marks a key milestone in Metacon's commitment to support the development of sustainable energy solutions in North Africa.

The contract includes the design, construction, and delivery of a one megawatt (MW) pressurized alkaline electrolysis plant to a major renewable energy firm in Morocco. This company stands out as one of the largest investors in African wind power, holding a renewable energy portfolio of around 2,000 MW. The system will be supplied as a turn-key containerized solution, facilitating a swift and efficient installation process on the customer’s site. The overall value of the contract is reported to be €1,820,600.

The primary aim of this pilot project is to create a platform for refining the technological aspects of directly coupling pressurized alkaline electrolyzers to wind turbines. It serves as a crucial preparatory step toward establishing full-scale industrial production plants focused on generating green hydrogen, e-fuels, and ammonia in Morocco.

As the green hydrogen market begins to flourish across several North African nations, operations like this are expected to become increasingly significant. The Moroccan customer has also articulated aspirations to emerge as a leading green hydrogen producer not only in the country but throughout the Northern African region. This initial venture is thus a pivotal step towards realizing their broader strategy for hydrogen production off-grid, which is specifically linked to several interconnected wind turbines.

Christer Wikner, President and CEO of Metacon, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the contract, stating, "I am very happy to announce that Metacon has won this contract with the regional energy leader in Morocco. This is hopefully the beginning of a long-term relationship aimed at realizing their ambitions for large-scale production of green hydrogen, e-fuels, and green ammonia in Morocco and beyond."

Furthermore, Metacon is fully committed to the development and manufacturing of energy systems that prioritize fossil-free, green hydrogen solutions. Through its Electrolysis business unit, the company collaborates closely with the world-leading PERIC Hydrogen Technologies based in Handan, China. Together, they provide comprehensive electrolysis plants designed for the large-scale production of hydrogen.

In addition to its electrolysis offerings, Metacon's Reforming business unit leverages its patented HIWAR® technology, which generates hydrogen from biogas or other hydrocarbons like bioethanol. This technology underscores Metacon's ongoing focus on advancing catalytic process chemistry and producing compact reformers aimed at improving the efficiency of hydrogen production.

As the world navigates the challenges posed by climate change, initiatives like Metacon's entry into the Moroccan market can potentially play a vital role in transitioning to renewable energy sources and achieving sustainability goals. With its innovative approach and commitment to clean energy solutions, Metacon not only marks its presence in Morocco but also enhances the global movement towards a greener future.
