In a groundbreaking move, Jobs for Maine's Graduates (JMG) has announced the launch of Generation US (GenUS), a national nonprofit initiative aimed at replicating Maine's successful model for helping K-12 students earn job credentials throughout the United States. This innovative program seeks to address the urgent need for career readiness in an era where a shrinking workforce and changing demographics pose significant challenges.
For over three decades, JMG has been dedicated to connecting students with recognized career credentials, serving more than 13,000 students each year across the state of Maine. With JMG’s wealth of experience and proven track record, GenUS aims to scale these efforts beyond Maine, ensuring that students everywhere can access the credentials required to succeed in today's economy.
The Context of the Initiative
Maine is among the pioneering states confront the reality of a declining number of college-aged individuals entering the workforce, a trend that is becoming more prevalent nationally. The statistics reveal that only about 38% of high school graduates nationwide proceed to obtain a college degree. In response to this demographic shift, employers from high-paying sectors like healthcare, manufacturing, and skilled trades are reassessing degree prerequisites.
According to an analysis by AIR, graduates from JMG are statistically faring better in the workforce, earning an average of $1,904 per quarter by age 19, compared to $1,277 for their peers who did not participate in JMG programs. Moreover, 53% of JMG graduates are employed at age 19, while only 43% of their non-JMG counterparts secure jobs. This significant difference highlights the effectiveness of JMG's approach in equipping students with the skills and credentials they need to thrive.
