Scania Unveils Its First High-Floor Battery-Electric Coaches at Busworld

Scania's High-Floor Battery-Electric Platform Debuts at Busworld

On October 3, 2025, Scania made a significant stride in sustainable transportation by introducing its new high-floor battery-electric bus and coach platform at Busworld Europe. This innovative platform marks a turning point towards electrifying segments of the transport market previously unaddressed.

Enhanced Capabilities for Urban and Travel Applications

The recently unveiled BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) platform is versatile enough to cater to both urban transit and travel applications, indicating Scania's commitment to addressing the varying demands within the coach sector. One of the standout features of this platform is its impressive range of up to 600 km, allowing operators to meet the needs of medium-distance inter-city traffic as well as airport shuttle services and sports team transportation. Notably, it offers luggage storage comparable to traditional combustion-powered coaches—an essential factor for operators looking to transition to electric vehicles without sacrificing functionality.

Diverse Use Cases and Applications

Beyond long-distance travel, Scania's high-floor battery-electric platform is tailored to meet the requirements of shorter inter-city routes, school buses, and sightseeing transportation that do not require as much luggage space. Additionally, its design supports the growing need for zero-emission bus rapid transit systems in urban environments, making it suitable for towns and cities across regions including Africa, Asia, and South America.

Built on Proven Technology

The technology underlying this new platform has been rigorously tested, ensuring that components from the e-machine to the batteries and charging system are reliable and effective. This adaptability extends to the e-machine output that can reach up to 330 kW. Furthermore, the platform accommodates a maximum installed battery capacity of 534 kWh, with 480 kWh available for use. The robust charging capabilities allow for a charging capacity of up to 325 kW, enabling compatibility with various bodied vehicles and operational requirements.

Responding to Industry Demand for Electrification

The launch of this battery-electric platform coincides with the rapid electrification of transport systems, which is now expanding beyond urban areas in Europe and internationally. Coach operators are increasingly looking for diverse charging solutions to meet their specific operational needs. Scania is at the forefront of this transition, offering a complete ecosystem of electrification services, including customer-tailored smart charging solutions. These solutions are designed to help operators avoid peak energy costs and maintain optimal battery performance, thereby ensuring cost predictability and transparency.

Carl-Johan Lööf, Head of Product Management for People Transport Solutions at Scania, emphasizes the company’s commitment to facilitating the industry’s shift towards sustainable transportation: “With the launch of the new high-floor BEV platform, Scania is not only introducing our first battery-electric coaches but also reinforcing our position as a trusted partner in the transition to sustainable transport.”

As operators seek to align zero-emission operations with their various travel needs, this new Scania platform stands as an ideal solution, poised to support the growing market for sustainable people transport.
