MacGregor Partners with Cochin Shipyard for LNG-Powered Containership Project

In a groundbreaking announcement, MacGregor has been selected to provide comprehensive cargo handling solutions for six dual-fuel LNG-powered containerships at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in India. This initiative marks a momentous step for both the Indian maritime industry and the global shipping sector.

Scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2031, these six containerships, each with a capacity of 1,700 TEU, will be built for CMA CGM. This project is not just significant in terms of cargo handling but also enhances India's ambition to serve as a key player in global trade and sustainable shipbuilding.

The scope of supply from MacGregor includes a detailed design, as well as essential components such as hatch covers, cell guides, deck stanchions, and fixed container fittings. This extensive order was formalized in the second quarter of 2026 and underscores MacGregor's commitment to supporting the growing demand for sustainable shipping infrastructure on the Indian subcontinent.

The dual-fuel vessels are designed to run primarily on LNG, adhering to CMA CGM's ambitious target of achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050. This collaboration also signifies a historic moment, as CMA CGM is the first significant international carrier to commission LNG vessels from an Indian shipyard.

A Strategic Partnership

Vijai Hari P, the Assistant General Manager of Business Development at Cochin Shipyard, expressed confidence in the partnership with MacGregor. He stated, "We are committed to delivering high-quality vessels with sustainable solutions that meet future market demands. Partnering with MacGregor for cargo handling ensures these vessels incorporate world-class technology. This project is a testament to our growing capabilities in the global shipbuilding arena and aligns with India's 'Make in India' initiative."

The successful acquisition of this contract was bolstered by VARYA Tech Private Limited, MacGregor's long-standing agent in India. Their deep-rooted knowledge of the local market proved essential in coordinating efforts between the shipyard and MacGregor.

Ajay Jalali, Vice President of Sales at VARYA Tech, remarked, "We are proud to have supported this significant agreement between MacGregor and Cochin Shipyard. Securing an order of this magnitude for CMA CGM's new fleet necessitates seamless collaboration and technical excellence. We eagerly anticipate these innovative ships contributing to India’s maritime modernization."

Looking to the Future

Magnus Sjöberg, the Executive Vice President at MacGregor, conveyed the company's enthusiasm for the project. He stated, "We are honored to be chosen by Cochin Shipyard for this landmark project. Our capability to deliver a complete, integrated cargo handling system will ensure both operational efficiency and safety for these state-of-the-art vessels. This order further strengthens our position as a preferred partner for complex newbuild projects globally, particularly as the industry moves towards more sustainable fuel solutions."

The collaboration stands as a significant milestone in the maritime sector, showcasing how international partnerships and innovative solutions can work hand-in-hand to advance sustainable shipping practices. MacGregor remains dedicated to enhancing safety, reducing environmental impact, and optimizing operational efficiency from new builds to upgrades and modernization.

In the fiscal year 2025, MacGregor reported sales amounting to approximately EUR 830 million, with a workforce of about 2,000 people across 30 countries. This strategic partnership with Cochin Shipyard aligns with the global maritime industry's transition towards greener solutions, ensuring a sustainable future for shipping worldwide.
