Conservation International Introduces New Leadership to Heighten Global Conservation Efforts

Conservation International Welcomes New Leadership

Conservation International, a leader in global conservation, has entered a new chapter of its journey with the appointment of a new CEO and an interim chair of the board. The organization, renowned for its decades of impactful work, aims to enhance global conservation efforts to ensure a healthy and prosperous relationship between people and nature.

New CEO: Sebastian Troëng

Sebastian Troëng has been named as the new CEO of Conservation International. With over thirty years of global conservation leadership experience, Troëng is well-positioned to lead the organization towards its ambitious goals. His extensive career includes nearly two decades at Conservation International, where he has played a crucial role in the organization’s focus on ocean and forest conservation, scientific research, and sustainable development initiatives. He succeeds Dr. Daniela Raik, who has been leading the organization in an interim capacity during this transition.

“I am deeply honored to return to Conservation International as CEO,” stated Troëng. “There is no better way to make a real impact on nature and people than through this organization. Our mission, values, and dedicated team are exactly what the world needs today.”

Interim Board Chair: Lisa Jackson

In addition to Troëng’s appointment, Lisa Jackson has taken on the role of interim chair for the board of directors. A respected leader in environmental management and sustainability, Jackson brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as the administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and as Apple’s vice president for environment, policy, and social initiatives. She has been a board member of Conservation International since 2019 and succeeds Robert J. Fisher, whose tenure has significantly expanded the organization’s reach and partnerships globally.

“It has been a true privilege to serve as the chair of the board at Conservation International,” remarked Fisher. “I am inspired by the expertise and commitment of our new leaders and confident that our path forward is in exceptionally capable hands.”

Commitment to Conservation

With Troëng and Jackson at the helm, Conservation International is poised to reinforce its commitment to science-based and people-centered conservation. The newly appointed leaders embody the innovation and determination necessary to tackle the urgent challenges facing nature today.

Recent progress under interim leadership has included major conservation achievements, strengthening the organization's global presence and influence while securing vital funding to promote its mission. Noteworthy accomplishments include enhanced protection measures for lands and oceans, bolstered climate initiatives, and impactful partnerships across sectors.

Troëng’s expertise and proven track record in transforming ambitious goals into tangible results make him an exceptional choice for his new role. He has directed conservation projects across Asia, Latin America, the Pacific Islands, Europe, and the United States, emphasizing local solutions and measurable impacts. Troëng holds a Ph.D. in animal zoology from Lund University in Sweden and has authored numerous influential publications in the conservation field.

A New Era for Conservation International

The acknowledgment of the impact of Conservation International's work is a testament to the hard work of its dedicated team and partners. “Together, we will continue to achieve significant conservation results for communities and ecosystems worldwide,” stated Dr. Daniela Raik, who led the organization through this transitional period. “I am excited to pass the torch to Dr. Troëng, whose vision and experience are destined to guide Conservation International into a new era of leadership.”

Lisa Jackson echoed Raik’s sentiments, emphasizing the urgency of protecting nature and communities. “I am committed to advancing our mission with urgency, innovation, and collaboration,” she stated. “In a time when the protection of nature has never been more critical, Conservation International remains a beacon of hope.”
