Costa Rica's Ornamental Plants Triumph at IPM Essen, Exploring Global Markets

Costa Rica Strengthens Its Position in the Ornamental Plants Market

Costa Rica has been a significant player in the ornamental plants sector, showcasing its products in over 43 countries. With more than 15 years of engagement at the IPM Essen trade fair in Germany, the country has solidified its reputation within the global market. The latest exhibition, held from January 28 to 31, highlighted 11 companies under the banner of the Costa Rican Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (PROCOMER). Together, they aimed to explore new business opportunities and strengthen their foothold in established European markets as well as emerging regions such as the Middle East.

The IPM Essen trade fair attracted over 36,000 visitors from 43 different countries, making it an ideal platform to showcase the diversity and quality of Costa Rican products. As a strategic venue for assessing market trends, it enables businesses to network and finalize deals in traditional markets and the rapidly growing Middle East.

According to PROCOMER's data, the Costa Rican ornamental plant sector achieved export sales exceeding $80 million by the end of November 2024, with key markets including the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. Europe stands out as a critical market with high demand for ornamental plants, providing fertile ground for Costa Rican exporters.

Mario Sáenz, Export Development Manager at PROCOMER, comments, "Our participation in the IPM Essen has been pivotal in the internationalization of the ornamental plant sector. This event is essential for consolidating our presence in Europe, which is our second most important export market, while also exploring new horizons in affluent markets like the Middle East."

The Costa Rican representation at the event included producers from regions such as Occidente, Sarapiquí, Guácimo, and Pococí. The exhibit showcased a wide array of products, ranging from various species of Ficus to Allocasias, Zamioculcas, and Phalaenopsis orchids. These products are known for their exceptional quality and sustainable production practices, aligning well with the values of the Costa Rican Country Brand.

Among the exhibitors was Agro Orchids, making its debut at the prominent event. Federico Gil, the company's General Manager, noted, "We have over 20 years of experience specializing in the production and export of Phalaenopsis orchids to more than 15 countries. Our first-time participation in IPM Essen is a remarkable opportunity to establish direct contacts with suppliers and potential new customers, allowing us to expand our international market presence and enhance our production capabilities to meet worldwide demand."

During the fair, Costa Rican companies have the chance to engage with key international buyers such as Adomex, Anthura, Royal Flora Holland, and Florensis. This not only facilitates discussions about contracts and business arrangements but also provides insights into current market trends, including new plant varieties and sustainability requirements.

Costa Rica's commitment to quality and sustainability in the ornamental plant sector has made it a competitor in the global market, and its recent participation in IPM Essen is expected to open up further avenues for growth. As businesses continue to navigate the complexities of international trade, Costa Rica's emphasis on exceptional products and strategic partnerships may help bolster its presence in the demanding floral market.
