Revolutionizing Product Design: Pigeon Launches New Gyu Gyu Vegetables with AI

In a groundbreaking move towards the integration of artificial intelligence in product design, Plug Inc., based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has announced the launch of their innovative design tool, the Crepo Package Design AI. This AI-powered solution significantly optimizes the design process, enabling companies to develop products more efficiently and creatively. Recently, it was utilized in the design of Pigeon Corporation’s new products, ‘Orange Gyu Gyu Vegetables’ and ‘Red Gyu Gyu Vegetables,’ set to hit the market on May 12, 2025.

AI-Driven Design Development

The initial stages of the design for Gyu Gyu Vegetables were dramatically enhanced using the Crepo AI. Traditionally, designers would take around two weeks to propose about five design options. However, this time, thanks to the capabilities of AI, nearly 100 design options were generated in just one week. This rapid output allowed the design teams from Pigeon and Plug to convene and review the extensive list of possibilities, facilitating a collaborative selection process that was both swift and effective. Consequently, the time for decision-making and consensus building was substantially reduced, allowing designers to focus on refining the selected concepts into final designs.

The innovative design process incorporates both generative AI for design creation and evaluative AI to predict consumer responses. The evaluation model has been trained on data from 13 million consumer surveys, enabling it to quickly assess how appealing different design elements might be to the target demographic. The steps involved in the design development process are as follows:
1. Generation of various design options using generative AI.
2. Discussion of design directions based on the generated options.
3. Designers refine and produce the final designs.
4. Use of evaluative AI to gauge consumer preferences and narrow down selections.
5. Final enhancements by designers to polish the chosen designs.

Comments from Pigeon’s Design Team

Yoshiko Onda from Pigeon’s Package Design Group highlighted the advantages of this innovative approach. By selecting from a broad array of options early in the design process, teams were able to quickly establish a shared vision for the project. This common ground not only improved the overall agreement between departments but also meant that designers could focus on fine-tuning the chosen concepts, rather than starting from scratch due to miscommunications or mismatched expectations.

Crepo Package Design AI: A Comprehensive Solution

Crepo Package Design AI is designed specifically to support product planning through the integration of design and AI technology. It features capabilities in three key areas: package design, key visuals, and naming/catchphrase development. Businesses can easily create designs that resonate with their brand identity and product image. Additionally, the design evaluation function allows for a quick assessment of consumer preferences based on previously amassed survey data.

By deploying this system, companies can expect substantial benefits, including:
1. Significant reductions in product development time and cost.
2. Increased sales for new or revamped products.
3. Enhanced operational efficiency for teams involved in product development.
4. A notable decrease in the risk of information leaks.

Numerous companies across the sweets, food, beverage, and daily goods sectors have successfully implemented this system, with several reporting impressive sales growth as a result. Crepo has also received accolades, including the Minister of State for the Service Industry Award at the 4th Japan Service Awards and a prize within the successor venture category at the 3rd Star Pitch Japan.
