Nippon Paint Launches SUSTAINA SYSTEM for CO2 Emission Calculation in Coatings

Introducing the SUSTAINA SYSTEM by Nippon Paint

Nippon Paint Company, headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo, is set to launch its innovative service known as the SUSTAINA SYSTEM on December 25, 2025. This service aims to calculate and provide detailed information on carbon dioxide emissions associated with its products using a high-precision method established in accordance with the carbon footprint (CFP) calculation rules approved by the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization (SuMPO).

The current shift towards carbon neutrality has heightened the demand within the construction industry for a comprehensive understanding of greenhouse gas emissions across the entire lifecycle of buildings. In response, Nippon Paint has undertaken significant strides, having previously achieved third-party recognition from SuMPO with its thermal paint, Thermo Eye Si, which earned the Type III Environmental Declaration (EPD) in January last year. Establishing a solid foundation for calculating emissions under SuMPO's standards enabled Nippon Paint to develop the SUSTAINA SYSTEM, solidifying its commitment to helping the construction sector transition towards carbon-neutral management.

The SUSTAINA SYSTEM offers much more than just paint emissions calculations; it evaluates CO2 emissions during three vital stages: the production of the coating, the application phase, and afterward. By providing a comparative analysis between its current products and prior offerings, the system allows companies to gauge the reduction effects of switching to more sustainable options.

Moreover, the calculations adhere to established lifecycle assessment standards (ISO 14040 and others), ensuring high-quality and objective environmental data to our clients. This not only supports companies' decarbonization efforts but positions Nippon Paint as a leader in environmentally-conscious business practices. The company is determined to continue developing products and services that minimize environmental burdens and contribute to sustainability.

Key Features of the SUSTAINA SYSTEM

The SUSTAINA SYSTEM focuses on various architectural coatings, particularly:

The CO2 emissions calculations will be conducted across three stages:
1. Production Stage: Assessing the CO2 emissions from the raw materials, containers, and transportation involved in producing the paint.
2. Application Stage: Evaluating emissions released during the painting process, where adjustments like reducing drying time can lower CO2 output.
3. Post-Application Stage: Measuring the impact of the painted film on CO2 emissions, with benefits such as energy-saving heat insulation and extended lifecycle of coatings.

How to Enroll in the SUSTAINA SYSTEM

Access the SUSTAINA SYSTEM through its dedicated webpage: SUSTAINA SYSTEM.
Following these steps:
1. Visit the SUSTAINA SYSTEM webpage.
2. Use the contact form at the bottom to submit your application, detailing your desired calculation (production, application, or post-application).
3. Expect a verification response from Nippon Paint.

Important Notes

  • - This service is specifically tailored for businesses focused on reducing their environmental impact and is not available for the general public.
  • - Companies are required to submit a confidentiality agreement for the handling of information to receive the CFP calculation results.
  • - Please allow about 1 to 2 weeks from receipt of the confirmation email to the provision of results.
