What is Gaidai Art Plaza?
Gaidai Art Plaza is a gallery that promotes the works of numerous top artists from Tokyo University of the Arts, displaying creations from faculty, students, and alumni. It is a rare venue where the public can freely explore art year-round, launched through a collaboration between Shogakukan and the university in 2018.
The gallery hosts rotating exhibitions that change every one to two months, featuring 10 to 50 artists each time. The displays encompass various art forms, including oil painting, traditional Japanese painting, sculpture, crafts, and design, all showcasing the diverse techniques and approaches unique to Gaidai.
The gallery’s White Cube (WC) space also hosts solo and group exhibitions featuring Gaidai’s faculty, students, and alumni. This area allows visitors to engage deeply with each artist's unique expressions from a fresh perspective.
In addition, the gallery houses a permanent feature called "LIFE WITH ART," displaying everyday art such as vessels and accessories created by Gaidai artists. Unique items, including one-of-a-kind drawing T-shirts, are also available for purchase.
Photography and social media sharing are generally encouraged, making the plaza a welcoming space for art enthusiasts and newcomers alike to explore and enjoy the world of art.
The Gaidai Art Plaza will also launch an official online shop in September 2024, offering handmade items, cutlery, teapots, and other original products made by Gaidai artists.
