Launch of the Sino-Pakistan Academy of Excellence for Engineers
On November 24, 2025, Shanghai Electric officially inaugurated the Sino-Pakistan Academy of Excellence for Engineers, a collaborative initiative between Shanghai Electric and Shanghai Dianji University. This Academy, designed to advance education in energy and electrical engineering, aims to cultivate internationally competitive and interdisciplinary engineering professionals. By fostering a robust platform for technological and cultural exchanges between China and Pakistan, the Academy plays a crucial role in nurturing talent that meets the demands of the Belt and Road Initiative.
The launch event was a hybrid affair, taking place simultaneously across three significant locations in both nations, facilitating the participation of various stakeholders including representatives from the Thar Block-I integrated coal mine and power project. They signed a cooperation agreement to kick off training programs, marking a pivotal step in this talent development initiative.
President of Shanghai Electric Group, Zhu Zhaokai, highlighted the urgency of developing versatile talents amidst the complexities of today's global industrial landscape. He emphasized the importance of integrating academic foundations with engineering practices and cultural competencies to meet the evolving needs of industries. Zhu described the Academy as a groundbreaking step towards creating a talent cultivation system that blends industry, academia, and research.
Gong Siyi, President of Shanghai Dianji University, echoed this sentiment, asserting that the Academy will serve as a premier overseas project for the institution. By leveraging high-quality faculty and educational resources, the University is focused on maintaining excellence in teaching and support for its talent development processes. Gong noted the Academy's role as a bridge fostering friendship and technological cooperation between China and Pakistan.
As the inaugural enterprise-led international engineering training program under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework, the Academy will offer tailored master's programs to meet the specific needs of the Thar Project, with an emphasis on energy and electrical engineering.
In an innovative approach, dual mentorship roles combining university professors and industry specialists will be implemented, ensuring that trainees are equipped to confront real-world challenges through a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical applications. This approach aligns with Shanghai Electric's broader strategy of systematic talent cultivation and enhancing industry-academia collaboration to create an environment ripe for innovation and technological advancement.
The establishment of the Shanghai Electric Academy of Excellence for Engineers is a continuation of Shanghai Electric's commitment to producing high-caliber professionals since its inception in 2024. By focusing on technological empowerment, the Institute aims to develop future leaders in technology.
Highlighting its proactive talent strategy, Shanghai Electric has increased its investment in research and development, allocating 2.546 billion CNY in the first half of 2025 alone, which represents a 9.4% year-over-year increase. Approximately 39.5% of this funding has been directed toward emerging sectors, signifying the company's dedication to addressing future challenges and opportunities.
In pursuit of sustained innovation, Shanghai Electric recognizes talent as its most strategic resource and commits to reforming its development frameworks to construct a robust and well-structured workforce. The Academy's implementation of various programs, including the Tech Expert Symposium—an event aimed at knowledge sharing and technical cooperation—underscores this commitment. Since its launch, the symposium has hosted multiple sessions focused on cutting-edge technological developments and engineering insights.
