Two Washington Students Advance to National Finals
Two outstanding students from Washington have reached the semifinals of the Mott Million Dollar Challenge, a prestigious national pitch competition for K-12 students. This exciting event will take place in Flint, Michigan on June 15-16, and features only 60 innovative ideas selected from over 3,700 submissions from young thinkers across the country.
Among these talented semifinalists, Isha Sharma from Beaver Lake Middle School and Kiren Makam from Tyee Middle School have presented exceptional projects. Isha's project,
MagicVerse-Kids, aims to partner with daycares to harness AI technology to transform children's artwork into digital keepsakes, such as scrapbooks and personalized products. This initiative not only helps families preserve beautiful memories but also enhances the creativity of children by enabling them to see their art come to life in new formats.
On the other hand, Kiren's proposal,
PureDrain, seeks to address environmental concerns by introducing a portable storm drain filtration system. This innovative device is designed to capture pollutants from runoff before they can harm local ecosystems, helping to protect forests and mitigate the spread of invasive species. This project underscores Kiren's commitment to environmental preservation and serves as a model of how young inventors can bring meaningful change to their communities.
For their efforts, Isha and Kiren will each receive a $5,000 award as semifinalists. As they prepare to pitch their ideas live in front of judges, they join a select group of young entrepreneurs who are shaping the future of business and social innovation. The Mott Million Dollar Challenge, funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, aims to promote entrepreneurship education and encourage students to build skills they need to succeed in an increasingly complex world.
The Challenge highlights the importance of nurturing creativity and entrepreneurial spirit among young people. By participating, students like Isha and Kiren not only gain valuable experience in presenting their ideas but also inspire others to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. A total of 5,300 participants from all 50 states and Washington, D.C. submitted their business ideas and social solutions. After an initial review, 1,500 submissions made it to the first round, with the top 60 advancing to the finals.
The event is collaboratively administered by various organizations, including the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), VentureLab, and the Young Entrepreneur Institute (YEI). Their joint efforts are crucial in fostering a rich environment for students to develop their entrepreneurial skills.
