Ferronova's Innovative Advances in Cancer Treatment
Australian medical technology company Ferronova has recently revealed its preliminary findings from the
MAGMAP trial, a promising study focused on the use of lymph node mapping in gastric and oesophageal cancer patients. This multi-centre trial involved a total of
62 participants, aiming to evaluate a new nanoparticle-based platform designed to aid clinicians in identifying sentinel lymph nodes—those critical nodes that drain a primary cancer.
The findings were presented by Dr. Markus Trochsler, the principal investigator, during the
22nd ISDE World Congress for Esophageal Diseases held in
Kyoto, Japan. The trial gathered participation from various esteemed medical institutions, including the
Royal Adelaide Hospital,
Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and others, collectively showing the commitment of the medical community in advancing cancer treatment methods.
Key Outcomes of the MAGMAP Trial
Among the essential achievements highlighted in the trial:
- - The employed nanoparticle, referred to as FerroTrace®, was administered to all 62 patients without causing any toxic effects.
- - Out of the 24 patients considered for a less invasive surgical approach, 18 (75%) had pre-operative chemotherapy. Remarkably, sentinel nodes were successfully identified in 23 of these participants, yielding an outstanding identification rate of 96%.
- - A significant milestone was reached with no false negatives detected among the seven patients with positive nodes evaluated, leading to a 0% false negative rate and a patient level negative predictive value of 100% in sentinel node pathology.
- - Additionally, for those with gastric-oesophageal junction or distal oesophageal cancers, the direction of FerroTrace drainage consistently matched that of the positive nodes, indicating the method's reliability.
Dr. Trochsler expressed optimism regarding these results. He noted that the MAGMAP trial represents a groundbreaking attempt to adapt technologies successful in breast cancer and melanoma for patients with gastric and oesophageal cancers. Previous efforts to transfer similar technologies have not yielded results, primarily due to the need for pre-surgical chemotherapy or radiotherapy, complicating the application.
“This study is the first of its kind where a marker has been injected prior to chemotherapy or radiotherapy before surgery, and it has demonstrated the ability to persist and remain detectable at the time of surgical intervention. The preliminary findings are exceptionally encouraging,” Dr. Trochsler stated.
He further emphasized the hope that these promising results might lay the groundwork for minimising surgical interventions for selected patients, ultimately leading to individualized treatment strategies that might enhance recovery and survival rates.
