Empowering Veterans: Celebrating Graduation of the First VLF Accelerator Cohort

The Veteran Loan Fund (VLF) has proudly announced a significant milestone with the graduation of its inaugural cohort of the Veteran and MilSpouse Business Accelerator program (VLF Accelerator). This initiative, made possible through the generous support of the Truist Foundation, aims to enhance access to capital and provide essential business coaching for veteran and military spouse entrepreneurs. As the VLF approaches a remarkable deployment of nearly $120 million in funding nationwide, the spotlight shines on the empowering accomplishments of its first cohort.

A Milestone Journey

The first cohort consisted of 37 entrepreneurs hailing from five different states, demonstrating the national reach of the program. Together, they secured more than $3.2 million in loan capital and an additional $150,000 in grants from the participating Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). The impact of their collective efforts is substantial, with projections indicating the creation or retention of over 120 jobs across various sectors.

The VLF Accelerator is structured as an eight-week program that merges practical business education with vital access to capital and ongoing technical support. The curriculum is delivered through a collaborative framework involving esteemed partners such as the University of Texas at Arlington’s Veterans Business Outreach Center (UTAVBOC) and the Veteran Women’s Enterprise Center (VWEC), along with various member CDFIs that contribute their specialized expertise.

Voices of Graduation

Participants have expressed their gratitude and insights, showcasing the transformative nature of the experience. Chandra Lamonica Winford, a U.S. Army Reserve veteran and founder of Winford Financial LLC in Georgia, shared, “This accelerator revealed the importance of dedicating time to focusing on the growth and strategy of my business, while also exposing me to innovative technologies that can expedite my growth.” She emphasized the invaluable connections made with fellow veterans and experts—potential mentors and partners.

Robert Dobynes Jr., another veteran and owner of a family-run optical practice in Missouri, underscored the significance of finding a partner who understood his business's legacy. “I needed more than mere funding; I required a partner who comprehended the stakes and the history of my family’s 40-year-old practice”, he expressed. His experience highlights the local support provided and the critical role of sponsoring CDFIs in fostering entrepreneurial success.

Expanding Horizons

The graduation of this first cohort reflects the broader impact of the VLF’s initiatives. By June 30, 2026, the VLF had successfully deployed over $118 million in loans, assisting 1,537 veterans and military spouses, with a significant contribution towards the retention or creation of more than 8,350 jobs nationwide. Since its inception in 2021, the VLF has established a robust network of CDFIs and specialized partners dedicated to offering affordable capital along with tailored business coaching and technical aid, empowering veterans and their spouses to build sustainable businesses.

The national Veteran and MilSpouse Business Accelerator exemplifies the expansion of this model by offering a structured curriculum while maintaining a focus on local relationships and individualized support provided by participating CDFIs.

Looking Ahead

With the success of the first cohort, applications for the second round of the VLF Business Accelerator will open on October 7, 2026. The program is set to continue its commitment to blending business education with accessible capital and technical assistance through its engaged network of CDFIs and specialized partners. Veterans and military spouses are encouraged to apply early as space is limited, and to explore further at www.veteranloanfund.com.

In closing, the Veteran Loan Fund extends its gratitude to the participating CDFIs, educational partners, investors, and supporters whose collaboration has made this national initiative a powerful platform for fostering the entrepreneurial spirit among veterans and military families. Their collective efforts pave the way for future cohorts and a sustained impact on the economic landscape for this deserving community.
