Reviving Discarded Flowers: Earth Song at Earth Day Tokyo 2026

As part of its commitment to sustainability, JR East's Development Company, known as JR-Cross, is introducing an innovative project called 'Earth Song', which aims to create a new cycle of resources and community engagement. This initiative will be showcased at Earth Day Tokyo 2026, taking place on April 18th and 19th at Yoyogi Park in Tokyo.

What is Earth Song?

The 'Earth Song' project focuses on the repurposing of 'Loss Flowers', which are blooms that, despite still being beautiful, are discarded due to irregularities or surplus. The project provides a platform for showcasing artisanal products like flower bouquets, candles, and floral bottles, all crafted from these lost flowers. Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in interactive workshops that utilize these repurposed flowers.

Historically, JR-Cross has featured sustainable products made from 'Slow Flowers' and 'Loss Flowers' in venues like the Takanawa Gateway Station and various commercial facilities within the Tokyo metropolitan area. The goal is to foster an appreciation for the complete lifecycle of flowers—from their creation to their eventual repurposing.

What to Expect at Earth Day Tokyo 2026

This year marks the inaugural participation of the 'Earth Song' project in the urban environment, aiming to engage with sustainability-conscious attendees directly. By leveraging these conversations, the initiative seeks to embody environmental considerations and community contributions, thus accelerating the creation of new cycles of resources and societal harmony.

Original Goods and Baked Treats

At the Earth Day event, attendees can purchase unique goods crafted from 'Loss Flowers' sourced from local flower farmers. In collaboration with 'Elab', a community hub based in Taitō, Tokyo, they will also offer baked goods that focus on using all available materials rather than adhering to strict standards. Notable products include:

  • - Flower Bottles (Small, 3,500 yen)
- Crafted from dried 'Loss Flowers', these bottles allow for lasting enjoyment.

  • - Kitchen Bouquets (Large, 1,200 yen)
- Featuring ‘Loss Flowers’ from rose farms in Toyokawa and gerbera farms in Hamamatsu.

  • - Flower Aromatic Wax Sachets (1,600 yen)
- Delicately processed flowers transformed into odor-absorbing sachets.

  • - Assorted Baked Goods (ranging from 550 to 600 yen)
- Created using seasonal vegetables, fruits, and the lesser-known cacao husk, bringing the entirety of the ingredient into play.

Interactive Workshops

In addition to shopping, the event will hold two interactive workshops designed to promote ethical living:

1. Loss Flower Potpourri Making
- Participants can create their own potpourri, customizing it with preferred scents and flower arrangements.
- Dates: April 18th & 19th, with sessions from 10 AM to 12 PM and 1 PM to 6 PM.
- Cost: 3,000 yen per participant (materials included).
- Age Requirement: 5 years and above (children must accompany an adult).

2. Eco-Bag Decoration Using Plant Stamps
- Participants can decorate eco-bags using stamps made from 'Loss Flowers' and leaves, allowing them to express their creativity.
- Dates: April 18th & 19th, with sessions from 10 AM to 12 PM and 1 PM to 6 PM.
- Cost: 1,800 yen per participant (materials included).
- Age Requirement: 5 years and above.

To participate in the workshops, prior registration is recommended via Peatix. However, there may be spots available for walk-in attendees.
