Illinois American Water Acquires Prairie Path Water Company

In a significant move to enhance its service capabilities, Illinois American Water, a leading subsidiary of the American Water Works Company, Inc. (NYSE: AWK), has completed the acquisition of the Prairie Path Water Company's water and wastewater systems. This acquisition, finalized on June 1, 2026, adds approximately 13,400 water and 3,600 wastewater customer connections to Illinois American Water's existing portfolio, marking a key milestone in the utility's growth strategy.

Commitment to the Communities Served

Rebecca Losli, President of Illinois American Water, expressed her enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating, "We are thrilled to welcome new customers and employees to the Illinois American Water family. Our goal is to provide safe, clean, reliable, and affordable water and wastewater services to the communities we serve. This transition will be supported by the expertise of local employees who understand these operations best."

The acquisition not only increases the number of customers but also introduces over 25 employees from Prairie Path into Illinois American Water’s workforce, who have been serving these communities with dedication. Illinois American Water has plans to invest approximately $67 million over the next five years to upgrade and enhance the infrastructure within these new service areas. This investment includes the replacement of aging water and wastewater mains, modernizing treatment facilities, and ensuring sustainable practices by identifying and replacing lead and certain galvanized steel service lines.

Focused on Customer Support and Transition

Illinois American Water recognizes the importance of community support, especially for customers who may be facing financial hardships. The utility offers several programs designed to assist those in need, including the Income-Based Discount Program, which provides qualifying residential customers with discounts on their monthly billing. Additionally, they have established the H2O Help to Others Program™, which provides grants for bill assistance, alongside various payment arrangements to ease financial burdens for customers.

As part of the acquisition process, Illinois American Water aims to ensure a seamless transition for the new customers. Detailed information about the transition process and available services will be sent out in the coming weeks.
