Codis Expands Reach in Europe by Acquiring Catalent's Nottingham Facility

Codis Strengthens European Presence

In a significant move for the pharmaceutical manufacturing landscape, Codis, a prominent global contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), has announced its acquisition of Catalent’s facility located in Nottingham, UK. This strategic acquisition, expected to complete in the third quarter of this year, will establish Codis as a leading provider of comprehensive spray drying solutions across Europe.

The Nottingham site boasts a wealth of expertise, specializing in oral solid dose (OSD) development and small-scale commercial manufacturing. For over twenty years, this facility has successfully aided in the delivery of development-scale spray drying solutions, making it a valuable addition to Codis' operations. As a result, Codis will enhance its offerings by providing an integrated process from development to final oral dose forms.

According to Nicolas Fortin, CEO of Codis, this acquisition plays a critical role in solidifying their capabilities in particle engineering and bioavailability enhancement solutions. With the Nottingham facility, Codis aims to provide a streamlined path for clients from formulation development to commercial-scale manufacturing, which often presents one of the biggest hurdles in pharmaceutical production.

Enhanced Capabilities

The Nottingham facility will align perfectly with Codis’ existing large-scale spray drying operation in Haverhill, UK, which is currently undergoing a significant expansion. This includes the installation of a new GEA Pharma-SD® type PSD-4 commercial spray dryer expected to be validated by 2027. With both sites working closely, Codis plans to offer robust scientific expertise along with integrated manufacturing capabilities within a unified quality system.

One of the foremost challenges in pharmaceutical development involves the poor solubility of small-molecule drug candidates. Spray-dried dispersions have emerged as a viable solution for improving the bioavailability of these candidates. By integrating formulation development and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) manufacturing in one location, Codis significantly reduces the risk associated with transitioning from formulation to large-scale commercial manufacturing.

Looking Ahead

Codis envisions this acquisition not only as a way to bolster its operational capabilities but also as an opportunity to better serve clients in the pharmaceutical, consumer health, nutraceutical, and over-the-counter (OTC) sectors. With more than 400,000 square feet of cGMP facilities across St. Louis, Missouri, Seymour, Indiana, and Haverhill, UK, Codis combines extensive regulatory experience with manufacturing strength, all under one trusted brand.

In conclusion, as the pharmaceutical industry continues to evolve, Codis' strategic acquisition of Catalent’s Nottingham facility reflects its commitment to innovation and excellence in delivering high-quality spray-dried solutions. This move positions Codis uniquely in the market, enabling them to meet the growing needs of their clients while maintaining the highest standards of quality and efficiency in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
